Newsom proposes $400 debit cards for vehicle owners to offset gas prices

by The AV Times Staff • March 23, 2022

Vehicle owners across California would receive $400 debit cards from the state under a proposal unveiled Wednesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom in an effort to provide relief from skyrocketing gas prices.

Under Newsom’s proposal, Californians would receive a $400 debit for each registered vehicle they own, with a limit of two. According to the governor’s office, the average motorist pays about $300 in gasoline excise taxes each year.

The rebate program will cost a total of $9 billion. Newsom also proposed $2 billion in other measures:

— $750 million to provide grants to transit agencies to offer free rides for three months;

— $600 million to pause a portion of the sales tax on diesel fuel for a year; and

— $523 million to pause inflation adjustments to gas and diesel excise tax rates.

“We’re taking immediate action to get money directly into the pockets of Californians who are facing higher gas prices as a direct result of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” Newsom said in a statement. “But this package is also focused on protecting people from volatile gas prices, and advancing clean transportation — providing three months of free public transportation, fast-tracking electric vehicle incentives and charging stations, and new funding for local biking and walking projects.”

Newsom’s proposal came on a day that the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County reached $6.021. The Orange County average is $5.976.

The proposal needs to be approved by the state Legislature. Newsom’s office estimated the debit cards could be issued beginning in July.

LOL…do you have even the first clue what you are talking about?

For the record, there are no “pipeline control valves” in the governor’s office.

        “pipeline control valves”

none needed when regulations prevent drilling.

The market prevents drilling. Mostly because the market is controlled by a cartel made up of a very limited number of suppliers. Two years ago those suppliers were PAYING PEOPLE to take oil because they couldn’t store it. Are you really surprised that they aren’t stepping up their production now?

            “The market prevents drilling”

That’s an over simplification, it’s just one of many factors.

Your business acumen has already been displayed on the rents issue, but do tell, what other factors outweigh the market?

Oil demand is very close to inelastic. It hardly changes at all as price changes. Everyone gripes about the price of gas, but they still pay it. When it goes down everyone celebrates…but they still buy basically the same amount. So there is no incentive for the suppliers to do anything but charge as much as they can get away with before the economy collapses and the government intervenes against them. Bottom line, that’s the truth about the oil markets, and none of your vague handwaving about “other factors” is gonna change it.

This proposal is strictly POLITICAL… Newsome is up for re-election this November.. He’s following the Liberal Left excuse, ”It’s PUTINS FAULT”… No, it isn’t! Prices for all ”goods & services” have risen since Biden took office in January 2021. How was it that we didn’t have HIGH INFLATION when Trump was President?? Let that SINK IN.. This is just a push to get off of fosil fuels, however most products NEED oil to be produced, like plastics.. Can you afford an ”Electric Car” at $60,000 & UP? What about ”Charging Stations’?? CA has enough problems ”keeping the lights on”, especially in HOT WEATHER that we get every year in the A.V…. Why are businesses leaving CA for ”Red States”? It’s too expensive to do business in CA, think TESLA, they moved to TX… Think with your ”Wallet” in November, not Party.. VOTE YOUR ”WALLET” FIRST, PARTY LAST!

“How was it that we didn’t have HIGH INFLATION when Trump was President??”

That’s an easy one. Inflation happens at or near full employment. For all of his grandiose false claims about jobs Trump never established anything like full employment. Not even close.

I would say “let that sink in,” but stone is impermeable so clearly your head isn’t going to get it..

“This is just a push to get off of fossil fuels, however most products NEED oil to be produced, like plastics.”

This is absolutely hilarious. This is one of the major reasons behind the push for renewable energy. If we just burn up the oil there are a whole lot of things that we won’t be able to make when it runs out. But you are so completely lost you are trying to use it to support the opposite position.

Does the compass in your head point south by chance, “Magnet”lady?

“Why are businesses leaving CA for ”Red States”?”

Mostly because they aren’t wanting to manufacture in China and get busted for using slave labor. and yes factories in China so use basically the same “indentured service” contracting that was recognized as slavery in the US a couple centuries back and abolished (for white people). Bit the “red states” are pretty much allowing very similar labor conditions to exist in their states so it’s “next best thing to China.” If you don’t mind working unpaid overtime, getting cheated on your pay, unsafe conditions both in terms of immediate risk by accidental injury as well as long term effects due to chronic exposure to hazardous materials you can go red state yourself a job and good riddance to ya.

But what companies should probably keep in mind is that much like investing in nations with autocratic governments can backfire badly when autocrats do what they do, you can wind up holding a bag of snakes if you set up shop in a red state. Ask Disney.

“VOTE YOUR ”WALLET” FIRST, PARTY LAST!”

This is excellent advice for Republicans. The Republican “trickle down theory” has been in place for four decades and has produced nothing but the greatest concentration of real wealth into the fewest hands since peasants overthrew the “divine right of kings” that gave ownership of everything in the kingdom to the king, including the peasants. If you are not a billionaire BY ALL MEANS vote your wallet.

Open the keystone pipeline, drill on American soil. Prices shot up immediately after biden took office, Putin is their scapegoat. Quality of life is crappy because of the president, not the gas prices. Gas prices were planned to push everyone in to the new green deal, a way to force people in to electric cars. Electric cars can be shut down remotely, as they are doing in Europe right now. For the love of humanity, please read all of the side effects the jab in fizzzerzz own released information, happy heart inflammation and may the blood clots be with you.

You can buy a lot of fuel for the price of a new EV, registration, and insurance.

I measure my quality of life based on how little time I spend in the ghetto called the Antelope Valley.

So Rex told people to illegally carry guns? Is he going to defend them for free when they’re arrested?
