PALMDALE – In celebration of July being Parks Make Life Better Month, Palmdale’s parks and recreation department is inviting Palmdale artists ages 12 and under to participate in a poppy coloring contest.

The contest is open to children ages 12 and under, who live in Palmdale. One winner will be selected from each age group, including ages 5 and under, ages 6-7, ages 8-10, and ages 11-12.

The contest coloring sheet is available at https://cityofpalmdale.org/971/Parks-Make-Life-Better-Month. Entries will be judged for creativity, use of color, and overall appeal. The picture may be duplicated, but each child may submit only one entry.

Entries are due before 5 p.m. on Monday, July 27. Entries may be submitted online or in-person at the Parks and Recreation Office located at 38260 10th St. East.

All entries will be showcased throughout city offices and facilities. Winners in each category will receive a recreation surprise bag.

“We miss seeing our littlest community members around town at community events and involved in our recreational programs,” said Palmdale’s Recreation Coordinator Rachel Serrano. “That is why we are reaching out and asking for their help with an important project. Since we cannot see their smiling faces, we hope to collect as many colorful poppies as we can to brighten up our offices.”

For more information, please call 661-267-5611.

Did you know that Joshua trees were named by Mormon settlers? I found that interesting. Furthermore, “Joshua” stems from the bible’s Joshua. I found that interesting.

I grew up in Palmdale, but left in 1973. Have a beautiful oil painting of lilacs in my North Carolina home precisely because I grew up with the annual Lilac Festival in Palmdale. I love lilacs, but no one believes we grew them in the high desert. They think I must have grown up in Michigan and am now suffering from dementia or a head injury. Do they no longer have the Lilac Festival?

Don’t connect Rex to Palmdale as he never graduated and works against the city.

Rex grew up in Palmdale. I’m not a Parris supporter, but I am well aware, this ugly rivalry between Lancaster and Palmdale was going on way before R. Parris was mayor of Lancaster. I am thankful most residents see the absurdity going on by a few.

Rex has stepped up the rivalry and has inflicted a lot of pain to the good people of Palmdale. I am embarrassed almost daily by his words and deeds. He needs to retire at his new mansion by the beach. Maybe he could start blogging and share his bizarre ideas with the world.

The festival went the way of the dodo a long time ago.
I currently have two young (3yr) lilacs in my yard, hope to make a hedge mixed with them. Both homes before this also had lilacs, nice older ones.

There are some in the A.V. that will even use this article about artists aged 12 and under to paint a poppy, to bring their agenda about weed or some other idiocy to spoil everything good. This article isn’t about Rex or Marv, so why don’t you leave these children alone and let them paint a poppy; and I hope these children don’t read your comment about weed. Even Bob Marley has better sense than you.

Marvin made Pot the flower of Plant 42 back before he had to leave the employment of the Fire Dept. Way back in the day. He is now reintroducing it to Lancaster. Pot is part of his and his friends culture.

Pot is part of the history of our Lancaster mayor and vice mayor. Why hide it from anyone? It’s legal now. It wasn’t when they were peddling it, but as we’ve seen recently Rex only obeys the laws that suit him.

The kids should know what kind of leaders they have. Maybe if enough of then realize how corrupt Lancaster really is, we can finally get the leadership we deserve. Leaders that serve ALL of us, not just the chosen few.

Are you proud that Palmdale has been infiltrated by Rex & Co.?

The mayor and most of the council are owned by Rex.

        Where have you been?

Let’s stop this now, O.K.? Tommy Gunn (Tommy Gun) was a sub-machine gun manufactured between 1921 and 1945. There is no official city flower in Palmdale. All state flowers (there are many), are embraced by every city in California. Don’t believe what commenters post here.

California Lilac grows in Acton and other places in California. There is a Lilac farm in Acton. This article is about the California Poppy, and the children 12 and under are asked to participate to paint the California Poppy. It is not called the Palmdale poppy. Use your internet to gather information.

Please do not be condescending to me.
I am aware that Eschscholzia californica is not called the Palmdale poppy.
What I was not aware of is that the city had a city flower.
          I found that interesting.

Now I am going to enjoy some ‘semillas de amapola’ (poppy seeds)

Lilac festival was a annual event in Palmdale. This is why staff does not know is because they are not connected to the city they work in. Did you know most staff do not live in Palmdale? This is the City flower and don’t make D. Massari come down there and give you a lesson on Palmdale history.
