PASADENA – A man who drowned his year-old daughter in Pasadena because he didn’t want to be a father was sentenced Friday to 25 years to life in state prison.
Marquise Jackson, 26, of Lancaster, was found guilty July 20 of one count each of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.
Prosecutors said Jackson killed his daughter, Mo’Nayjah Jackson, on May 20, 2011.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Jackson drowned baby Mo’Nayjah at the apartment of the child’s mother, in the 100 block of West Del Mar Boulevard in Pasadena, while the mother was at work.
The baby wasn’t breathing when police and firefighters were called to the residence, and rescue workers unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate her.
Police said Jackson subsequently confessed to the killing, telling investigators that he didn’t want the responsibilities of being a father.
