Mario Carreno Roman was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle collision, which occurred around 1:55 p.m. Sunday, April 12, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

“Roman was driving a 1991 Toyota pickup southbound on 87th Street East, north of Avenue S-8,” the CHP report states. “Roman lost control of his vehicle in the curve of the roadway [and] crossed into the northbound lane directly into the path of a northbound 2012 Nissan Altima.”

The three occupants in the Nissan Altima, including a 5-month-old infant, were airlifted to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for treatment. (LUIS MEZA)

The Nissan Altima crashed into the right side of Roman’s pickup truck, killing him, according to the CHP report.

A back-seat passenger in the Altima, 25-year-old Maribella Acosta of Littlerock, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries, the CHP report states.

The driver of the Altima, 24-year-old Jose Dejesus Villarubio of Littlerock, and a 5-month-old boy in the middle-rear seat suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP report.

The infant was properly restrained in a car seat, said CHP Sgt. Tim Jacobson.

All three occupants in the Nissan Altima were transported by helicopter to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for treatment.

My family and I have lived on 87th Street East just south of East Avenue S-8 for the last 25 years. We have seen on average at least one major accident per year, a fatal collison every 2-3 year. Always in the area of the curve that turns 87th into 90th Street East. How I wish they would put a “Slow Down Deadly Curve” sign up. Or a “Slow Down, Current Death Toll___”, or a “Stay Alive” sign like the ones up on Pearblossom Hwy.

Yes I know know where the curve on 87/90th is, i live next to it. Yes some people drive like idiots and may in fact be idiots. That does not change this fact: That curve between East Ave S and Ave T has been the site of MORE than it’s fair share of major accidents.
