Abused dog headed to foster care

by The AV Times Staff • August 11, 2014

Daisy will recover at foster care before being placed up for adoption.

LANCASTER – The dog seen on cell phone video being abused and slammed onto a Lancaster street is headed to a caring foster home, authorities said Monday morning.

“Daisy” is a female, black and white pit bull mix believed to be about six months old, according to officials at the Lancaster Animal Shelter.

An examination showed no outward injuries.

An examination showed no outward injuries, but the puppy will be monitored in foster care for at least two weeks before she can be placed up for adoption, said Sgt. Montez of the Lancaster Animal Shelter.

“We want to bring her out of the trauma by having her in a home with one of our fosters so that when she does come back for adoption, she’ll be that happy puppy,” Montez said.

Daisy appeared timid, but was otherwise in good spirits as she licked and nuzzled up to Sgt. Montez at the Lancaster Animal Shelter Monday morning.

Someone has already expressed interest in adopting Daisy when the animal gets out of foster care, Montez said.

Robert Martin of Lancaster was arrested Aug. 8 for felony animal cruelty after Martin was allegedly seen beating and slamming the puppy on the ground near Lancaster Blvd. and 5th Street East. Local resident Lindsey Cooks captured the abuse on video and notified authorities. (View the disturbing video below)

“Upon the deputies’ arrival, deputies learned that the suspect was seen walking a small, black (mixed breed) dog on a leash before punching the dog several times. Deputies obtained a video recording from a witness and upon review, contacted the suspect, 53 year-old Robert Martin, at his residence in Lancaster,” stated a Sheriff’s Department press release issued Monday.

Martin remains jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail.

I am so glad this other judge saw fit to keep the case going as I believe, a felony animal abuse charge. I wonder if Daisy was the only animal in his home. I’d hate to think of him having another animal!

I hope some of you wonderful folk can attend the court hearing tomorrow, Friday 8/21/14. Preliminary hearing is scheduled to start around 8:30 am.

Robert Martin does not seem to think there’s anything wrong with punching and slamming a defenseless creature, and pleaded “not guilty” to animal abuse even thought it was captured on video (thank you Mr. Cook!).

Since he was let out on bond under his own recognizance (what a joke!), I’m afraid that if enough people are not present, he will walk without being punished.

Daisy needs a voice. Will you be her voice?

I am with you in spirit as I am in the UK. People like that do not deserve a dog.

Yes, I’ve been asking people to please try to attend on Wednesday, Sept 10th at 8:30 AM but being a work day, it isn’t easy. I hope there is enough time for people to arrange to take the day off to be there. It’s SOOOO important.

I think it’s about time the laws should be changed to jail time and maybe we won’t see so much abuse to these poor defenseless animals. I hope this poor dog goes to a loving home and enjoys the rest of his life. It’s too bad we can’t abuse the abusers like he did to his dog so he knows what it feels like. It’s disgusting and I can’t understand why people buy these dogs and then hurt them.

I hope that little dog grows up with a happy family that will take care of him and love him…
and as for the moron who beat him… he better say some serious prayers because he’s got some bad karma lined up for himself.

Thats funny how people care more about a dogs life then human life in the AV there are bigger issues at hand. Silly people!! Cute dog though….obey your next master!

So I am assuming the bigger issues at hand are all of the meth addicts in this valley right??
Animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment are a huge issue in AV. “Obey your next master” really?? Hmmm… maybe you should be swung around by a leash and slammed to asphalt. Just saying!!!

      August 13, 2014 at 1:03 am

You are wrong…people should care more about creatures that can not speak or understand things for themselves! Children, elderly and yes animals! You are an idiot!

      August 13, 2014 at 3:37 am

You can care for both animals and people! This “person” does not deserve our respect! He deserves to be beat and thrown to the cement like he did to this helpless puppy! Is that how you “train” your kids? By violence? What an ignorant human being!

      August 13, 2014 at 6:19 am

Its called being compassionate you moron. You and your attitude is what is wrong with society. People with your same ignorant mentality are the biggest threat to domesticated animals.

people like you is why i care more for animal life than humans, I was severely abused, literally tortured for pleasure by my parents and only loved by animals as a child. Animals love without judgment and cruelty and abuse is a HUMAN concept, humans as a whole are monsters

SOB!!! He needs to have his head banged in the sidewalk. And the people laughing need to be taught that laughing about a dog being brutalized is not funny!!! He is nothing but a coward! I would have ran up to him and started beating his ass and held his face to the concrete until the police arived. Oh this makes me sick!!!!

  10. Janet G. says

    August 12, 2014 at 7:03 pm

And this is why we all have to write to our government reps to demand harsher sentencing for animal abusers. It is a fact that people who will harm an animal rarely stop there. A person like this man is a real danger to you, your children and your neighbours!!

Thank you Mr.Cooks for being brave and coming to little Daisy’s rescue. We all need to stand up to animal cruelty and/or ANY cruelty or bullying of others. It makes one wonder what happened in the perpetrators life to turn him into such an angry and hurtful person. He does need to be punished for his actions, but more importantly he needs help to change his behavior or he will go on to be even more abusive only now he’ll be more secretive so he won’t be caught. I am very afraid for any helpless animals or people that come into contact with him in the future. A lot of prayers need to be said for all who are involved in this situation.

It’s people like you (the person taking the video) that make a lot of possitive differences in the world today. Bastards like that can’t hide their evil personalities any longer. They will be found out and displayed for the world to see and then go to jail. Good on you video person.

I pray the idiot arrested gets his just rewards in prison with the max sentence…..Again I thank you and God Bless you.

Mr. Cook – you are a good person ! I have 3 small dogs and I could not hurt them
nor would I tolerate witnessing someone else doing harm to a dog. You are smarter
than me, as I would have gone after that guy and ended up in jail myself.
But because of you, Mr. Cook – authorities handled this properly and now I hope
the Judge will render the just sentence and include this guy can never again own
a dog. Shame on him and bless you Mr. Cook!

Good Luck Doggy. I hope you do not have to deal with humans like the one you were taken from ever again. Unfortunately, we cannot exterminate them and they have more rights than they deserve. Poetic justice would be to watch a film of him being abused they way he abused you but, that won’t happen. Thank God you were saved.
