PALMDALE – A 21-year-old Palmdale man accused of driving under the influence, crashing into an SUV carrying small children and then attempting to flee the scene on foot is facing multiple felony charges, authorities said.

Nestor Kevin Antonio was charged Friday with driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury, driving with a .08% BAC causing injury, leaving the scene of an accident, and unlawful vehicle operation, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

Antonio took off running after the crash, but he was captured a short time later, one of the victims said. (LUIS MEZA)

The charges stem from a crash that occurred Wednesday night (July 16) on Avenue S, near 56th Street East in Palmdale.

Palmdale Sheriff’s deputies have released little details regarding the crash; however, a passenger in the SUV spoke with The AV Times shortly after the incident (view the video below).

Brandon Nuyens said he and his young relatives were riding in an SUV headed westbound on Avenue S when a car started swerving and ended up in the SUV’s lane.

“We tried dodging him and he ended up catching us in the back of the car… we almost flipped over because of him,” Nuyens said.

Following the crash, the suspected DUI driver tried to run away, according to Nuyens.

“He tried hopping walls into the neighborhood, and they [deputies] went chasing for him,” Nuyens said.

Antonio was captured soon after near 57th Street East and Avenue S. He was arrested around 10:40 p.m. on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury and booked at the Palmdale Station jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Antonio appeared in an Antelope Valley courtroom Friday and pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury, driving with a .08% BAC causing injury, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawful vehicle operation, Santiago stated.

A preliminary hearing on the case is set for July 30.

Three people were taken to the hospital following the crash, though the extent of their injuries was not clear.

Innocence (or guiltlessness) is a term used to indicate a lack of guilt, with respect to any kind of crime, or wrongdoing. In a legal context, innocence refers to the lack of legal guilt of an individual, with respect to a crime.

Could this have been prevented? Yes. Is it a tradgey for everyone involved? Yes.
Can we use this event to prevent future tradgey? Yes. It starts by taking responsibility for your actions.

    HHHMMM? “UNLAWFUL VEHICLE OPERATION” THAN CAN ONLY MEAN;
That he was driving either WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE, RESTRICTED LICENSE OR NO LICENSE AT ALL! TOO BAD THE SHERIFF DEPARTMENT DIDNT RELEASE DETAILS ON THIS INCIDENT. AND YES LOOKING AT THE VIDEO YOU CAN SEE THAT BOTH THE CHP AND THE PALMDALE SHERIFF WERE AT THE SCENE…

The article fails to mention that the suspect was pinned down on the ground by a local male Hispanic resident who claimed he was tired of people running through his yard. Without this citizens arrest the suspect would have likely gotten away. First law man to assist the resident was a CHP. LASD ain’t worth a damn.

Nunca, if you were not there you know nothing about this. Don’t try to blame others for the suspect’s actions. If he is innocent, why did he run away? You would be doing him a big favor telling him to man up and admit his mistake… that is what mature adults do. He is very lucky he did not kill anyone or himself, and now is the time for him to think about what he did and do what is needed to make sure he never does this again.

Stupid idiots!! So sick of this!! The system is a joke when it comes to punishment! People that steal a candy bar face more time than these stupid criminals do!!
