LANCASTER – A 42-year-old man believed to be responsible for strong arm robberies at three Lancaster businesses is now behind bars, authorities said.

Ronald Russell has admitted to robbing an east Lancaster Dollar Tree on Nov. 17, 2012, a west Lancaster Dollar Tree on Nov. 18, 2012, and Party City on Valley Central Way on March 3, 2013, according to deputy Miguel T. Ruiz of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

Investigating deputies initially had only an obscure photo of a pick-up truck as a lead. Through their continuous efforts, they located a vehicle driving in Lancaster matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle – a 1995 faded green Ford F-150 truck.

The vehicle was connected to Russell, and Lancaster Sheriff’s Station Deputies with the Robbery Suppression Team served a search warrant Thursday morning at a residence in the 44500 Block of Benald Street in Lancaster.

They located Russell, who was on federal probation for bank robbery, and Russell admitted to the crimes, Ruiz said. Russell was booked at the Lancaster Station Thursday and is being held without bail.

I wonder if the vehicle was identified and tracked by LEAPS until it was found to be located at the same address as a person on federal probation. Through extended observation they were able to establish a pattern of activity at the residence, then they were able to quickly obtain a search warrant and serve it when he was home.
Considering this is tactical information that could potently tip off a potential suspect, it’s unlikely that we will be reading a story like that in the news..
I’ll bet that there is a 100% REAL chance that LEAPS was used in this case..

Now there was some good old fashioned investigatory teamwork between detectives and patrol to make this bust happen! Kudos, LASD!
