LANCASTER – The City of Lancaster is now accepting applications for its annual Youth in Government program, to be held during the month of February. Each year, the month-long program presents local high school students with the opportunity to interface and experience City government first-hand.
Facilitated by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Arts department, the Youth in Government program offers select students the opportunity to work with City employees and officials in various departments to expand their knowledge and awareness regarding the operations of their local government.
Students will also collaborate on a community project and facilitate a mock City Council meeting.
“Our Youth in Government program is a wonderful way for teenagers to learn about city government, and become more aware of what takes place in their community,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “Whether these young adults are considering a career in politics, law enforcement, city planning, public works, law or even teaching, a better understanding of local government will greatly aid them in all their future endeavors.”
Since its inception, the Youth in Government program has worked to create informed youth which will become active participants in their local government as future employees, officials and patrons. Youth in Government allows participants to develop personal growth and encourages responsible citizenship by providing the proper tools and leadership skills needed to identify with local government.
Applications are being accepted for the 2013 Youth in Government and are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013.
Applicants must attend a Lancaster area high school and reside within Lancaster city limits. To pick up an application, stop by the Parks, Recreation and Arts Department at Lancaster City Hall, located at 44933 Fern Avenue.

How does it keep these kids out of trouble. The kids that are accepted into this program are at the top of their class and would never get into trouble to begin with.
