WAVE gives Westside students the gift of music

by The AV Times Staff • December 21, 2012

PALMDALE – The West Antelope Valley Education (WAVE) Foundation has awarded grants to three Westside schools for the Anaheim Forum Music Festival on May 10, 2013.

Grants of $1,000 were given to both Hillview Middle School and Del Sur K-8 School to allow 50 students from each school to participate in the festival.  A grant of more than $1,500 was awarded to Joe Walker STEALTH Academy to allow 111 students to participate in event.

WAVE is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to raising money for Westside schools for the funding of special programs in music, science, arts and many other areas of study.  The grants from the WAVE Foundation will help provide transportation for students to the music festival in Anaheim.

The Forum Music Festival is a series of competitions in various musical categories.  Events are held throughout the year in several California cities, and hundreds of schools participate.

“It seems fitting that these grants are awarded this time of year as we celebrate the holiday season,” said Superintendent Regina Rossall.  “I can’t think of a better present for our students than the gift of music and we wish them good luck as they prepare in the coming months to compete at this festival.”

“This is a wonderful thing for our kids,” said Board of Trustees member and active WAVE participant Gwen Farrell.  “There is nothing like music and we are so grateful that the WAVE Foundation can provide this opportunity for our students.”

Westside Union School District provides a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and participation in the Anaheim Forum Music Festival allows the District to expand that curriculum to a more concentrated focus on music and arts.

“At Westside, we continue to strive for excellence in everything we do for our students,” Rossall said.  “We want to build well-rounded students with skills in both the arts and sciences.  Our participation in this competition is yet another reason why we are the district of choice for students in the Antelope Valley.”
