Local brewery brings home the gold

LANCASTER – Kinetic Brewing Company, a brew pub located on The BLVD, recently claimed one gold and two silver medals in the 2012 Los Angeles International Beer Competition. The global beer competition was presented in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fair.

“We are excited to be receiving these accolades so quickly after opening,” said Steve Kinsey, owner and brewmaster at Kinetic Brewing Company. “We hadn’t even been open for six months when we learned the results of the competition.”

Kinetic Brewing Company was awarded a gold medal in Category 44 – German-Style Kölsch for their Potential Blonde. Originally brewed only in Cologne, German, many American brewpubs have now created their own versions of this once obscure style; Kinetic included. Medium bodied and pale in color, the hop bitterness is slightly assertive while the malt is somewhat grapey with a dry finish.

Kinetic Brewing Company was also awarded a silver medal in Category 68 – French- and Belgian-Style Saison for their Saison Printemps. Saison, a sturdy farmhouse ale that was traditionally brewed in the winter, then aged and consumed throughout the summer months by the farm hands. Historically very low in alcohol, Kinetic Brewing Company’s interpretation of this style was made with over sixty pounds of locally sourced alfalfa honey from Bee Honey in Lancaster. Saison Printemps features a mild fruity aroma with earthy, spicy yeast notes. It is lightly hopped and malty sweet with a dry, but lingering fresh finish.

Finally, Kinetic Brewing Company was awarded a silver medal in Category 74 – Robust Porter for their Fusion Porter. Porter, a rather broad style open to brewer interpretation, may be distinguished from Stout as lacking a strong roasted barley character. Kinetic’s version employs over a half dozen malts which lend to a rich, complex brew with strong notes of coffee, caramel and chocolate. Firmly bittered, but balanced toward the malt with a dry, mineral finish.

Los Angeles International Beer Competition winners were selected by a panel of over 50 judges comprised of judges sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification Program, professional brewers and industry professionals. The competition saw over 500 entries from over 75 breweries, some from as far away as Italy.

While the competition is internationally entered, the majority of the entrants hail from California with strong representation coming from the Southern California region. The 2012 competition drew the largest, most international field of entrants in the history of the Los Angeles International Beer Competition.

My only complaint is that I’m allergic to the alcohol in the beer, but love the flavor. I am always on the prowl for truly good nonalcoholic beer, though, and they don’t have one.

In either case, however, congratulations to Kinetic for their wins!

Love the porter. Was VERY pleasantly surprised to see that Kinetic has a beer garden at the Hangar. For the same price as your basic Bud/Miller/Lite/Etc., you can get a handcrafted brew.

Beer lovers in the AV really can’t complain much. Kinetic and Bravery have great local beers; Yard House has 120 world class beers on tap; Carino’s has like 200 different available in bottles…BWW has many taps; delicious stuff at BJ’s; then there’s BevMo and Clock Tower on 20th West and J (or K…near Denny’s)for more amazing selections.

As Homer Simpson would say, “•Ah, good ol’ trustworthy beer!”
