Pedestrian hit, killed by van in Lancaster area [UPDATE: Crash victim ID’d]

LANCASTER – A San Bernardino County man was struck and killed by a van early Sunday morning in a Lancaster area with no streetlights, authorities said.

The fatal collision was reported around 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, on Avenue I east of 80th Street East, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

According to the CHP, the man was hit by a 1994 Ford Econoline 350 van that was traveling eastbound on Avenue I. The motorist stopped at the scene and was not arrested.

“This collision happened during the hours of darkness. There are no streetlights at this location,” the CHP report states.

The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man from Colton, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.

The occupants in the Ford Econoline — 48-year-old Jose Venegas [driver] and 48-year-old Yakeline Almendares, both of Lancaster — were not injured in the collision, according to the CHP report.

The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information on this crash is encouraged to contact CHP Officer D. Veliz at 661-948-8541.

UPDATE 11/29/22: The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Hector Reyes of Colton, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
