L.A. County Supervisors take step to ban gas-powered leaf blowers in unincorporated communities

by The AV Times Staff • June 15, 2022

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has moved toward banning gas-powered leaf blowers in unincorporated communities and incentivizing the adoption of alternative equipment.

A motion introduced Tuesday, June 14, by Supervisor Kathryn Barger and co-authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn was unanimously approved by the board. The show of support signals that LA County is committed to aligning with the recently approved California legislation that requires the state’s Air Resources Board to ban the sale of gas-powered lawn tools by July 1, 2022.

“Adopting this motion sets a clear course of action for our county to safeguard our unincorporated neighborhoods and help small businesses comply with new state rules,” Barger said. “I’m all for aiding small business owners in their switch to more environmentally friendly landscaping equipment. Change is hard and inflation is sky high – everyone is feeling a squeeze. I’m hopeful that county-sponsored grants and other incentives will accelerate change and make a difference.”

“Gas-powered leaf blowers are loud and pollute more than many cars,” Hahn said. “We need to phase them out but making the switch to zero emissions tools is expensive. We should support these small businesses and individual gardeners and help offset the costs of replacing their equipment.”

The motion calls for a feasibility study led by the county’s Chief Sustainability Officer, in collaboration with subject matter experts from several other county Departments, including the Departments of Economic Opportunity, Consumer and Business Affairs, Public Health, Public Works and the Office of Immigrant Affairs.

A report back is due by October 2022.

Well, Trump appointed all his family members to presidential advisory positions, and they are all at least part of a horse.

It never stops to amaze me how dumb people are, and how easy they are fool but the crazy lunatics portraying themselves as planet saviors. Reminds me of how those idiots cried out loud about nuclear energy until they got what they wanted, to shut down nuclear plants. Only for government around the world to now start realizing what a huge mistake it was. And not just that, what a huge failure the so called clean energy is. Not inly when it comes to the damage to landscape and the environment, but to the local species, specially birds. Now more and more countries are restarting to build new uranium free nuclear power plants. Because it makes sense for the environment.

When it comes to this dumb law, I am not entirely against it. But we are not at a level where the technology can be supportive of a clean environment. For all you lithium lovers, do some research and look at how much toxic waste is generated to produce and dispose of those batteries. With most people throwing them in the trash, only to pollute for a very long time to come.

This reminds me of when the enviroheads claimed that there were billions of trash bags pollution LA. So we needed to ban plastic bags ASAP! They couldn’t even get their figures correct. They said that there were 5 billion bags polluting the streets of the county. Plastic bags got banned. Then they said that there were also 5 billion plastic bags polluting the streets of LA City. Plastic bags got banned. Then they claimed that there were… yup, 5billion plastic bags polluting all of California. And dumb people bought it. Trust me, if there had been 5 billions plastic bags all over the city of LA, it would had been VERY noticeable…. VERY!

So we banned plastic bags, and switched to “reusable” plastic bags that come all the way from China. Where environmental pollution takes a back seat to profits. They cross the whole ocean, and cargo ships pollute more than all trains, airplanes, and trucks combine. Crap, I should had not said that, now they will want to ban ships. I guess we could get out goods from China to the US on the backs of swimming donkeys. And guess what, people still use those bags as if they were disposable. And studies have shown that most are full of bacteria after just a use or two.

I personally think that leaf blowers need to be banned, gas or electric. They not only pollute and put a extra strain on the electrical grid, but the dust they put up in the air is unhealthy to breath.

How quick they are to ban the leaf blowers without something to replace it, my husband is a gardener and we have tried the battery operated equipment and the batteries just don’t last and our client’s don’t always have outside plugs that we can plug electric equipment into, so what are we suppose to do?
This is no different then getting rid of gas cars with electric cars, our power grids can’t handle the demand now so how would it be if everyone has electric cars? Right now you can water your yards 2x a week next will be you can use electricity only on odd numbered days?

There’s an even more amazing modern invention: battery powered tools. They don’t pollute, and they are quiet. Bonus.

Are those electric devices that operate on lithium batteries? ‍♀️ Oh yeah those things are out of this world amazing…. at polluting! Wake up and educate yourself before you make as ass out of yourself. Those things pollute from the moment they are made all the way to their end.

And they don’t work worth a damn. I have used both gas and electric. The electric ones SUCK. Yeah, I want to go green, but the only ones who will green on this are those who are trying to sell crap product. Who will get hurt the most? The laborers who are mostly people of color. Thank you morons in Sacramento for nothing.
