Op-ed: Rep. Mike Garcia stokes xenophobia in the High Desert

by Opinion • October 13, 2021

Congressman Mike Garcia [mikegarcia.house.gov]
By Breanna Chico

If you’ve been keeping up with local news, you’ve probably noticed the recent headlines claiming “Narco Wars” have taken over the eastern valley thanks to illegal marijuana growing operations. After a record breaking bust of the illegal grows executed by LASD on June 8th, which nabbed $380 million dollars worth of product and infrastructure in Lake LA, Congressman Mike Garcia did not hesitate to politicize the moment: “To our president and to our vice president, this is what happens when you don’t secure the border,” he said. “We’re not in Sinaloa, Mexico right now. We’re 300 miles away from the border and we have one of the largest illegal drug operations happening in the backyard high desert of Los Angeles (County).”

Garcia’s accusation that the Biden administration has failed to “secure the border” came only days after VP Harris urged Central American migrants and asylum seekers “do not come” to the settler state we know as the USA. Although President Biden promised zero deportations in his first 100 days in office, he hit approximately 26,248 deportations within his first 29 days. In May, immigration advocates spoke out against the administration’s failure to act on behalf of Haitian migrants, saying “It’s like [former Trump adviser] Stephen Miller’s ghost is still pulling the strings of Biden’s immigration policies. And the Biden administration needs to do more to root out Stephen Miller’s ghost”.

The number of people deported under the new administration coupled with VP Harris’s remarks show us that there is a bipartisan consensus on how to deal with asylum and migration.

Garcia’s office claims that an international cartel ring consisting of Mexican, Central American, Armenian and Chinese are running these illegal grow operations. The Marijuana Eradication Team put together by LASD and the Narcotics Bureau has reported armed men standing guard with assault rifles while alleged cartel members steal water from the city’s aquifer as well as shootouts at grow houses and death threats to farmers located near the grows. MET claims they do not have the funding to accurately combat the racketeering, and many Lake LA residents agree that the problem is out of control due to the small number of cops on patrol in the area.

During a town hall held by the Citizens Oversight Commission this past June, many Lake LA residents spoke against the defund movement, saying that conditions would worsen in their neighborhoods if funds were reallocated from LASD’s 3 billion dollar budget in the name of criminal justice reform, echoing García’s stance on the issue. It’s worth noting that defunding would likely not result in fewer sheriff’s on duty but trained mental health and de-escalation professionals working side by side with sheriffs as they respond to 911 calls.

Looking at 93550, the most policed zip code in Palmdale, which also boasts the highest crime rates, most minority dense population and worst health disparities, we see no shortage of crime, both violent and drug related. The high number of sheriffs on patrol are not preventing crime from taking place. In fact there is no data whatsoever that proves more cops equal less crime. Just as borders do not prevent migration and anti-choice laws do not stop abortion, sheriffs don’t prevent crime, they simply respond to it.

The issue of illegal marijuana grows is being used to vilify racialized groups and anyone who looks like they could be foreign born in our community. As we saw with anti-Asian and Pacific Islander hate crimes during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know this type of rhetoric can be the match that lights a fire under violent nationalists. García also uses the marijuana issue to justify the continuation of US asylum law violations and preservation of the carceral state.

Mike García may be one of the most outspoken politicians on the far right, but his remarks to the Biden-Harris administration about securing the southern border are completely redundant when you look at all the ways the administration has carried on Trump era immigration policy. From refusing to end immigration deterrence policies like Title 42 and Remain in Mexico, to the footage of Border Patrol officers in Texas whipping Haitians as they attempt to seek asylum, to Vice President Harris blatantly telling Guatemalan refugees that the US will defend its borders if they dare show up at any US-Mexico border, it’s clear that the promises made by Biden and Harris on the campaign trail are broken.

What García is calling for is a complete shutdown of the border, just one step to the right of where we currently are.

A vote for Democrats in the White House was supposed to be a vote against the unrepentant racism and xenophobia the Trump administration represented, yet what we are receiving from this new administration is the same nativist policies and a more diverse group of oppressors. With midterm elections coming soon, many moderate and progressive Democrats are eyeing García’s seat. It would be great to see our current congressman be sent home but we must be wary of his replacement being a more palatable version of García.

Regardless of the outcome of the election, the fight for humane solutions to the manufactured border crisis will go on. Find the organizations in your community or in your state that are working everyday to keep families together and end the human rights violations committed by the US at the border, in detention centers, hospitals, schools and beyond and ask what you can do to support.

Alone we can accomplish a little, together we can accomplish a lot.

    AV Times:

Just curious..how long are you going to run this despicable hit piece to defame Garcia? Isn’t there anything else of interest? You sure censor my posts a whole lot, but will let this article by a unpatriotic communist run forever; SMH

It’s the internet, nothing ever goes away. The next time someone submits an op-ed piece that makes the cut it will take the front page spot, but that isn’t going to mean anything gets removed.

By the way, “defaming” is the least of what insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia deserves. Dismissal from office is closer.

Interesting claim, considering the Mike Garcia article you posted under.

Now let’s look at a real payoff to “big pharma” and who was not only responsible, but probably got your vote for their efforts.

Before insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia our local GOP stuck us with “representation” from Steve Knight. When Steve Knight was trying to get re-elected a big part of his campaign was his “no hero left behind” bill. The local GOP ate that up and was crushed when Knight got rightfully kicked out of office by people who READ THE BILL.

The GOP can call something “no hero left behind” because they count on their faithful voters to never check on them, and their propaganda machines like Fox News to never call them out, but READ THE BILL. That doesn’t take any “trust in the media,” all that is required of you is that you can f’ing read..but of course loyal GOP voters just don’t do that.

The GOP idea of not “leaving heroes behind” was to pump a mountain of money through the VA to pharmaceutical companies that gave them huge campaign contributions in return. The money was given as payment for “advanced” (ie experimental) equipment that the VA then used in what amounted to a medical trial on veterans. So not only were the companies given a windfall of cash, they were provided with test subjects for their trials who did not consent.

So go ahead with your nonsensical and unsupported blather about how “the evil democrats” are doing this and that…but take an honest look at who you vote for. Your big pharma supports the GOP…because they own them.

Just spoke to Frances at Garcia’s Palmdale office re: his NO vote on the Bannon resolution.

I asked her if that represented her as an American and she said “No.” and took my message that he has neither honor nor courage. There is no excuse for that vote no matter what he says.

    He represents Truimp not me.

Garcia voted NO on the 2nd impeachment and the 1/6 investigation in additon this NO vote.

He’s got to go. He only won by 300+ votes last time and should be shown door like Steve Knight before him.

For those who want to continue their defense of the Proud Boys, this is how the government of Canada described them when it added them to their list of terrorist groups:

“members of the group espouse misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and/or white supremacist ideologies and associate with white supremacist groups”

So, feel free to defend them on the but they aren’t all white” grounds as much as you want. For my part, I will concede that calling them a a “white supremacist activist group” did not do them the justice of acknowledging their wide ranging bigotry.

Nice try, Tim, but no, the Proud Boys are not white supremacists. No one here is defending Proud Boys, no one, so you are bringing a false assessment into your comment to defend your self. It is a multi-racial group that justifies violence to support their ideology. You can be bigoted regardless of race, class, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Look up the definition of bigotry, Tim and apply it to you also, since you’re so quick to condemn with a lie.

      • Stinger says

        October 21, 2021 at 8:44 am

You ARE defending them, Claire. The definition given was directly quoted from another source, so, naturally, you attack Tim with the usual bullschnit. Seems that the description given in his post is echoed by various anti-terrorist watch groups. Since Tim is supporting his allegations with outside evidence that is, incidentally, also supported from various standard sources and you are not, I can only determine that Tim is not the liar here.

BTW: Did you know they are also misogynists? NO female members allowed into their little boys club. But, hey, keep trying…

Sorry you two, no one including me was or is defending the Proud Boys. They are not white supremacists, and I know exactly what their ideology is. Saying they are not white supremacists is not defending them, but I expect the usual bullying from both you Tim and the crew that post here. You are both lying, but I expect this. Please quote the part of my comment that says I defend the Proud Boys. I abhor violence whether it comes from the Proud Boys, ANTIFA, Jan. 6 insurrection, BLM movement, KKK, and so on.

Why yes I have, Tim, he was black and he liked me. He hated Trump, but some of them defected and ended up supporting him, so there was a major split in the group over this issue. The KKK, and White Nationalists are white supremacists along with Trump. It’s really hard to be black, Asian, Mexican etc., and be a white supremacist. I’ve met a really stupid ANTIFA white guy and his girlfriend that busted up a peaceful family at a park because they were bored and needed something to do.

It was actually what he called “white guilt.” He was a solid racist and thought that white people should “stick to their own kind.”

I understand that you probably hate me because I’m obviously smarter than you, but that is more of a general answer to why you are just so widely hateful I suppose.

As I already noted, the Proud Boys may be more of a “we are united in hatefulness” than pure white supremacists, but they sure don’t have any problem welcoming white supremacists into their ranks. I guess they will accept a black person so long as they can hate on some other group together. They’d probably even welcome a hateful basic clown, even while they hated her behind her back, on some sort of “we hate this group together when we aren’t hating her” program. But at the end of the day they will always resort to the same “final pure state” of angry white men.

We’ll see how “law and orderly” Garica is on Thursday.

The House will vote on criminal contempt for Bannon.

This should be easy for the Republicans but we’ll see.

It seems that by invoking the absurd “executive privilege”, it suggests that there is a “there” there with his talks with Trump re: 1/6.

These guys are so inept and so are their fans.

Yeah, for anyone interested in following the law a yes vote on holding Bannon in contempt is a no brainer. However there is pretty much no question that the insurrectionists will vote no as a block, including insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia.

Well, since Eric Holder actually was a member of the administration that was in office at the time there is a vast difference, legally, between him and Steve Bannon…but we know that Trump and the rest of his insurrectionist swine are trying to replace the rule of law with a Trump imperial fiat “justice” system so your claim, while absurd, is not a surprise.

If it was truly an insurrection, folks surly would have been charged by now, it’s been 10 months now.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 22, 2021 at 6:22 pm

LOL…you apparently have no clue how the gears of justice grind…that is SLOWLY. Getting someone convicted in the federal justice system takes ten months when they confess and plead guilty.

But that is off the point. The little rioting footslobs weren’t plotting an insurrection, they were just playing their part. Disrupt the congress, keep the vote from being certified by the deadline. 99.9% of them wouldn’t know enough about the process to even take a wild guess as to what the consequences were supposed to be.

But Bannon knew. It was more than likely his plan, even more than Trump’s. That’s why the insurrectionist swine like Mike Garcia want to protect him from questioning.

Where is Garcia’s concern for domestic terrorism, especially white nationalist extremists?

1/6 was an example of that. If Muslims stormed the Capital, the Repubes would be singing a different tune.

Are the Republicans completely aligned to ignore it as it serves them. Remember when they WEREN’T outraged by bombing of abortion clinics or killing abortion doctors?

Yeah. That’s the Republican for you. It’s not just what they exaggerate but also what they ignore to serve their partisan purposes.

It is more of a threat than the drug business here. Those cartels aren’t canceling my votes in national elections or willing to shut down the government or not voting to increase the debt ceiling.

I think the posted opinion is a very clear statement that is fully in keeping with the positions of Solidarity Collective, based on what I have since read of their materials. I don’t see where there has been any attempt at deception. I don’t agree with everything in the article and I’m not running out to join Solidarity Collective, but the only deception here is the basic clown’s claim that the writer is a “commie.”

      • Claire says

        October 19, 2021 at 12:08 pm

I disagree with your opinion Tim. I believe there is plenty of deception. Honestly, “commie’ is definitely an immature assessment, but on the other hand I see that Breanna used deception by separating herself from DSA, and is now using a more palatable term Solidarity Collective.

        • Tim Scott says

          October 19, 2021 at 1:56 pm

          Well, no.

The Solidarity Collective is a single issue activist group that is generally considered to be borderline extremists. The DSA is a growing political party that is obviously just to the left of the progressives in the democratic party, but isn’t really in the fringes at all and is certainly not considered to be extremists other than by the hard right wingers. If there was a “deceptive separating” it certainly wasn’t towards anything “more palatable.”

Consider the parallel case of a member of the Proud Boys. The Proud Boys are a white supremacist activist group, not a political party. Safe to say that most if not all members of the Proud Boys are also Republicans, or at least vote Republican, but that doesn’t mean they are being deceptive when they say “I’m in the Proud Boys” and don’t add “and also a Republican.” I don’t add “oh and I’m a Democrat” when I show my membership card at Costco.

This article was definitely a position statement from Solidarity Collective. It wasn’t 100% representative of the DSA platform. So I think the attribution is fair. It really doesn’t make much difference, since to basic clowns “they are all just commies anyway.” In basic clown land *I* am “just another commie” despite the reality that I could list elected Democrats that are to the right of my positions on one hand, and among my personal circle there are actually zero. The current GOP is so immersed in their purity testing that everyone that doesn’t have Trump in their mouth is “just a Democrat, and Independent, or a RINO, commies all.” And they have no idea what a communist actually believes, so it works for them.

By the way, we aren’t actually discussing this administration’s policies here, we are discussing the basic clown notion that the definition of “communist” is “anyone who isn’t a republican.” This results from her responding to a proposition that insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia being taken to task by someone about activities that have nothing to do with economics is best responded to by making false accusations about that person’s positions on economic issues.

This undoubtedly is because insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia is indefensible. I assume you realize that and that’s why you want to shift the topic to me, or the Biden administration, or I guess anything other than the insurrectionist swine Mike Garcia.

What was deceptive? The Democratic Socialist Party is a political party. Solidarity Collective is an activist organization. I am not a member of either one, for a number of reasons, but I don’t think that being a member of either one (or both) is some sort of red flag that makes everything said here automatically bad. That’s the kind of “argument by assaulting the source” that basic clowns engage in, and it’s mostly disgusting.

The basics of this description of Mike Garcia are accurate. He conspired with other desperate Republicans to gin up this whole “cartel” fantasy to generate good press for himself in the Trumpist orbit.

The people who got hammered by “the great task force” weren’t undocumented immigrants and they have nothing to do with any “crisis at the border.” They were actually residents of the district he is supposed to represent who were denied access to licensing that the voters of California have said very forcefully that they should have had. The “task force” was in fact organized by the very people who used their offices to deny that licensing opportunity for their own profit.

If Mike Garcia was really representing his constituents he’d have been opening an investigation into Wrecks Parris, not backing his corrupt abuse of power.

As to Solidarity Collective, it’s an activist organization so could have overlap with a number of political parties. I doubt they have any “you must be in this political party” requirements for their members.

From the other side, political parties are generally not going to say “you can’t be in the party if you are in another organization. I obviously don’t care about harsh…I am plenty harsh myself. But basically, a clown that is inaccurate will always get challenged. It doesn’t matter whether you say “commie” or “communist” when you are talking about people that are neither. If Clair wants to help you what she should really do is line you up with an economics book and a tutor.

As to your comparison of the two major parties, you missed another key point besides your already pointed out cluelessness about what a communist is. See, AOC and the rest of the progressives, and Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists, don’t run the Democratic Party. They are part of it (well, Sanders and the DSA actually aren’t, but anyway), and have input, but they are tempered and balanced against the liberals, obliviously moderates, and fiscal conservative social libertarians.

On the other hand the “capital storming meanderers” (let’s call them the traitorous insurrectionists that they are) and the “Q types” aren’t just a piece of the GOP, they have taken over and are running the show. The only Republicans that are NOT actively in that lead group are appeasers that will go along with whatever the insurrectionists and conspiracy nuts want to do lest they get purity tested right out of the party. That is how a political party dies, because all it can get from that point is smaller. The appeasers can never appease enough to satisfy the purity testers, and as we have seen in the past year or so the exodus gets overpowering.

I think the GOP is too far down that slope to recover. Look at Arizona. GOP stronghold for ages. The Arizona GOP has seen thousands of former members register as independents this year. There were stretches where they were losing thousands of members daily. They have a very vulnerable democrat senator up for reelection and maybe if they win that they can turn things around, but because they have run out so many members all they have left are nutbags so the best they can do for a challenger is the state party chair that presided over the disastrous collapse in their numbers. She is going to campaign on the same themes that drove away thousands of her own party loyalists…and guaranteed she is going to tell those former Republicans that left the party “I don’t care, I don’t even WANT your votes!” because she is genuinely clueless about the most basic tenet of getting elected, which is “get votes.”

Mexican gangs are growing drugs and stealing water in our back yard.
These are facts, not racist propaganda.

Telling people the truth is not racism, it is life.
Grow up and start enforcing the laws.

The “Mexican gangs growing drugs in your back yard” are most likely not Mexican and have absolutely nothing to do with any border. So that particular piece of your claim is the actual propaganda, and yeah is probably racist.

Meanwhile, on “enforcing the laws”…the people who got raided in the “mighty bust” that Garcia takes credit for were, in fact, operating an unlicensed business. There is a law against operating an unlicensed business. So, sure, busting them is legit in it’s way. Now, question…do you think massive destruction of property is typically included in “enforcement” of that particular ordinance? Or was that massive taxpayer expenditure to fly Mikey boy around in a helicopter at over “the scene of a crime” just a political sideshow? Propaganda, if you will?

“The “Mexican gangs growing drugs in your back yard” are most likely not Mexican and have absolutely nothing to do with any border“

You are dead wrong if you talking about all these grows across the eastern and western wings of the high desert,
Phealan , adelanto, lake LA, Nenach and others.

Keep your head in the sand, it would benefit us all.

        Wait,
Aren’t you the same dude who claimed catalytic converters aren’t stolen from thieves cutting them out from underneath the victims cars?

If so I’m definitely wasting my time with you.

          October 14, 2021 at 3:47 pm

I would think that someone calling themselves “Gutierrez” knows that a dark skin and a name ending in Z doesn’t mean someone just snuck across the border. Plenty of unlicensed growing is going on, and undoubtedly since a majority of the locals are Hispanic there are plenty of Hispanic people involved. But it’s just wild xenophobia making the “huh, must be border violators” assumption.

By the way…I just talked to a guy who had a catalytic converter to sell. He has a whole bunch of other parts too. You think he disassembled a victim’s car in their driveway?

So, let’s check on what YOU know and how. Tell us about these “Mexican gangs.”

Have you been out there at these grows checking IDs? A hundred bucks says the answer there is no.

So if it isn’t based on names and looks, how have you determined they are Mexican?

Go ahead, back up your claims.

            …

            …

            Any time will be fine.

Guess that accounts for me being so popular.

This Gutierrez guy should meet up with our basic clown and the two of them can try to teach each other how to be insulting without making themself look silly, because between them they haven’t a clue.

As ro being “responsible in discourse,” are you going to defend your absurd claims, retract them, or just go off on a tangent and hope people forget how you were challenged?

          D. Gutierrez…The only thing that matters are the communities involved, right? This is a big problem for the people involved and I agree with you. Anyone’s opinion here doesn’t matter and neither does a politician promoting his agenda, they all do. Thank you for your comment and you don’t have to prove anything, no one else does.

Wrecks doesn’t like the competition. Garcia is helping to keep the competition away. Wrecks blames it on climate change so he can hide behind his so-called green interests to deflect people from looking at all the harm he’s caused and millions of dollars that have been lost due to lawsuits or no bid contracts.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 15, 2021 at 1:13 pm

Well, yeah. It definitely impacts Wrecks and his partners in the ragweed growing operation they have going, but I don’t consider Wrecks and company to be representative of “the community.”

          October 19, 2021 at 10:18 am

The ‘Mexican Gangs’ who are growing drugs in our backyard allegedly came here because of climate change. Wrecks said there is no water in the Mexican desert so they came to the Antelope Valley desert to get water to grow weed.

This guy is a mayor of a city? Moving from one desert to another to get water because of climate change?

He wouldn’t vote to impeach Trump the second time.

He voted NO on the 1/6 investigation.

As to the “sell his office to support his son”…do you have evidence that doesn’t “come for free” from DarkDingBat’s Blog, or whatever else it is you and your ilk are calling “news sources” these days?

That might work in rural Michigan, but if he thinks he can run successfully here with that baggage he is not only completely out of touch with the realities of the district but also has the worst advisors since ever.
