Fall cleaning & home maintenance tips for Californians

by Content Partner • October 7, 2021

Fall in California is a mesmerizing show thrown by Mother Nature and Her strong leaf-color changing game. The eclectic explosion of red shades and yellow hues lets us know it’s time for the switch from summer to a deep state of hibernation till springtime once again. No matter if you live in the Sierras and have already started enjoying the show starting early September, you live in Antelope Valley and you are ready for a more forgiving sun, or you are a dweller of one of the low elevations in South Cali where fall lasts till late December, you’re in for a blast.

Just make sure you make the time to go outdoors and enjoy everything that nature has in store for you this fall. Having a clean, neat, and tidy home decorated with burning candles, spooky season decorations, and colorful pumpkins awaiting you on your return is also one of the greatest feelings in the world. This is why it is important to make sure you have a proper checklist for fall home cleaning and maintenance ready.

Without further ado, here is what you should do to get your home ready for a safe and cozy fall.

Home and Garage Cleaning for Fall

Carpet Cleaning

Vacuum, wash, or deep clean all your carpets and area rugs and get them ready for the fall. Hire My Home Carpet Cleaners and have them inspect your beloved carpets and precious area rugs, recommend the most suitable solutions and implement them using their advanced cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing equipment.

Kitchen and Bathroom Cleaning

Also, do a deep tile and grout cleaning in all bathrooms and the kitchen areas, including any countertops, and wash all your curtains and upholstery using homemade cleaning products such as mixes of vinegar and baking soda. For instance, you could use some ice cubes to clean the garbage disposal, then put some hot water and baking soda to flush all the dirt down.

Get rid of old pots, pans, and appliances you no longer use, and vacuum and organize the attic, any tool shed, or rooms around the house that you do not frequently use.

Smoke Detector, Air, and Water Filter Cleaning

Check smoke detectors and sensors, and remove accumulated debris and dust from their slots to prevent false alarms. Replace drained batteries and clean your vent’s grease filter by closely following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not hesitate to use the vacuum inside the refrigerator as well as the freezer condenser coils, and replace all water filters. Do not forget about the air ducts, and have them cleaned as well. Clean the blades on your ceiling fans, as well as the covers and blades of the exhaust fans in the bathrooms covers.

Patio Cleaning

Wood decks or patios should be inspected for any loose boards, damaged or raised nails, and exposed areas. This is particularly important for steps, decks, and rails. Have exposed areas painted or stained after using a high-pressure cleaner to give them a good cleanse.

Landscape Cleaning

Get ready to rake the falling leaves, as well as the beautiful pine cones and their needles – but do save a few to make your very own homemade fall decorations. Place the raked leaves in a large paper bag to be more eco-friendly and make sure to rake the leaves after the first strong fall winds for a more efficient job.

Roof Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Fall in California

  • Inspect your roof for problems and potential vulnerabilities. See that the vents are correctly caulked and hire a repairman or tackle any small repairs on your own if you have the experience, tools, and materials for it.
  • Make sure the weather stripping on your patio sliding doors and windows is working fine and that the garage door can be shut and managed properly. If needed, perform re-caulking jobs.
  • Check all the gutters, especially if you live in a region with a lot of trees or if you own have mature landscaping in your back or front yard.
  • Thoroughly clean the chimneys and get ready for some cozy fires on cold fall and snowy days.

Finally, make sure to check the state of your heating and cooling systems around the house and service them before the cold season is ready to officially begin.
