LANCASTER – A man in his 60s died at the hospital Monday after he was hit by a car while trying to cross the street in Lancaster, authorities said.

The collision happened around 4:11 p.m. Monday, April 5, near the intersection of Avenue K and Stanridge Avenue, according to a news release from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

The man was walking southbound across Avenue K when he was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling eastbound on Avenue K, the news release states.

The man was critically injured and was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, but he was in his 60s, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

“The cause of the collision is still being investigated. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs played a role,” the sheriff’s news release states.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is encouraged to contact traffic investigators at the Lancaster Sheriff ‘s Station at 661-948-8466.

No. A pedestrian only has the right of way in a street when in a crosswalk (marked or un-marked). Based on the picture the man was not crossing at the corner of Avenue K and Stanridge (which would be an unmarked crosswalk) but nearby.

I witnessed that accident, the driver had enough to stop and let the gentleman pass because I did. FACTS!

You can’t control what others will do. Like continuing to walk just because you let them go.. You may have avoided this situation but stopping abruptly for pedestrians in the center will put others at risk of rear-ending each others and cause further catastrophe.

he was disabled and couldnt make it across the street fast enough. No excuse. The car should have stopped.

Even more reason to make it to the cross walk, which was a couple hundred yards away.

Drivers are required to stop for ALL pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right of way at EVERY INTERSECTION in California, even if there is no painted crosswalk.
People will only rear end you they aren’t paying attention and/or aren’t leaving enough space between cars, as described in the drivers handbook.

Can you explain how jaywalking works then?

Where should they have crossed the street?

It is not reasonable to expect someone to add a quarter mile to go to division for a crosswalk.

First off I’m sorry the gentleman lost his life, secondly, based on the pictures it’s not a quarter mile, and thirdly, yes it is reasonable to expect someone to stop. What’s not reasonable is to expect 4 lanes on traffic going 45-50 to suddenly stop on a dime because someone stepped off of the sidewalk. Plus it’s the law.

        April 7, 2021 at 11:22 am

Not reasonable? At his reported age he was brought up to know to cross at a crosswalk. Even if it is a few blocks down a very busy road.
For that matter anyone at any age should be able to use their common sense. I am sorry the gentleman died but don’t be saying he should not be expected to go by the laws and rules too.

      • Use the crosswalk no mater where it is says

It’s not a victim less crime. Somebody’s day was spoiled in a big way through no fault of their own. Jay-walkers caught doing this need some serious community service requirements to learn there’s a time and labor cost for them too.
