LANCASTER – A female passenger in her 20s was pronounced dead at the hospital Monday night following a two-vehicle collision in a Lancaster intersection, authorities said.

The fatal crash happened around 10:47 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at the intersection of Avenue J and Challenger Way, according to a news release from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a male adult and his female adult passenger in a Ford Fusion were traveling northbound on Challenger Way in the #2 lane approaching Avenue J. A female adult in a Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Challenger Way, making a left turn to eastbound Avenue J on a controlled green arrow,” the news release states.

“The male adult in the Ford Fusion possibly failed to stop at the solid red signal, where both vehicles then collided in the intersection,” the news release continues.

Both occupants in the Ford Fusion were transported to Antelope Valley Hospital, where the female passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to the news release. Her name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, but she was an adult female in her 20s, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials did not release details on the Ford Fusion driver’s injuries or what if any injuries were sustained by the woman driving the Honda Civic.

“Alcohol/drugs appear to be a factor in the collision,” the sheriff’s news release states.

The cause and fault in this collision are still being investigated, sheriff’s officials said. Anyone with information regarding this collision is encouraged to contact the traffic investigators at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station at 661-948-8466.

What the article failed to report is the individual who ran the red light suffers from a medical condition called “Gluggle-Gluggle Syndrome”. It’s a rare condition that affects 1 in 2 million Americans. This could have been a major factor.

This is a sad story but this is what happens when you are on drugs and drunk driving around the whole city at 80 to90 mph putting yourself and other innocent people at risk. Tired of people doing this all the time

We actually have the same amount of car accidents as similar metro areas, they are just getting reported more because we don’t have as much to report in our newspaper up here. I did a search when I was wondering why we had so many pedestrians getting killed in accidents and found the same, so it’s not that we have a huge amount of these things going on, it’s that the paper reports it every time. Whereas a paper such as the LA times probably isn’t going to report on a fatality crash or pedestrian fatality in Korea Town or Hollywood, or wherever. They are still happening though.

The speed limit had nothing to do with this collision. clearly states he ran a red light.

How funny, this thread has exposed the lack of education in the area. Which explains why there are so many accidents, nobody knows how the law works or why there are laws.

Well ‘the law’ is two fold in its purpose.
First it is meant as a deterrent to try and prevent people from breaking it. Without knowledge of laws people will unknowingly break laws. Most of us know that stealing is wrong but there are those that still do it.
Second it helps to define situations for judgement/prosecution against those that break it knowingly or unknowingly.
Collisions occur in this valley at a high rate because Driver’s Education was taken out of most California high schools. Often the teen waits until adulthood to take the driving test. Often with inadequate education in the laws and operation of vehicles. Too many in this valley avoid getting a license, and insurance. Often the reasoning I hear is it is their ‘right’. When pressed they cite something about freedom to interstate travel which has zero to do with operations of a motor vehicle. (Lack of knowledge of law). Others think they are just sticking it to ‘the man’.
So in a parking lot, the person backing out has right of way. The person travelling down the parking lane has to give them clearance.

Sad!! Drugs and Alcohol appears to be a factor. If you are going to do drugs and drink… don’t drive. This accident and death could have been avoided. Just stupid…now a family has to bury a child because of one person being stupid!! Stupid thinking results in stupid results!!

“The male adult in the Ford Fusion possibly failed to stop at the solid red signal, where both vehicles then collided…”

And with the possibility of DUI and a dead passenger, he has a lot of explaining to do.

It not that speed limits are way to high. THE FACT IS PPL DO NOT FOLLOW THE SPEED LIMITS. THERE’S RARELY ACCIDENTS THAT HAPPEN WHEN DRIVING THE SPEED LIMITS. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN MAINLY ABOVE THE SPEED LIMIT. No more police is needed. Defunding is whats needed when board harassing citzens because of boredom. Invest into camera again or traffic enforcement agencies the city needs to provide that.

I would like to see the number of car fatalities in the AV in 2020 compared to Covid-19 fatalities. Speed limits are way too high in this Valley within the developed parts. Instead of defunding the police, invest in more patrols. The police need to walk quietly and carry a big stick because drivers up here are downright awful. I’m tired of having near death experiences multiple times a week.

Yeah, for Sure! I just wrote to Gov. Newsom to get the CHP to enforce traffic regulations. Eighty mph + is way to high, yet it’s all to common everyday.

        October 6, 2020 at 8:17 pm

Are you implying that the CHP is sleeping in the shade while cars zoom by? Maybe the problem is about a dozen cruisers are trying to cover an area twice the size of the rest of LA county? But that’s ok, you did write to the guy that can can raise the budget to fix it. But will he?

People just need to pay attention. Look around before entering an intersection to see if speeding cars are not looking like they are going to stop. Cause you still can. You have to look out for yourself. Be aware , look look look. I send prayers to all families involved here, a tragedy for a girl so young.

For the family and loved one’s of the lost, you’re in my thoughts & I wish piece finds you

Yeah more officers will definitely cause people who commit traffic violations to stop. Cause we all know the police have psychic abilities to know when someone impaired who could otherwise displayed no signs to not stop at red light or is about to drive reckless for the fractions of seconds it takes to have an accident. Now lets not mention the amount taxes it would cost to employ enough additional officers to actually have an impact & the criminal proceedings & incarceration resulting in addition cost the taxpayer. There is no amount of policing that will ever stop these things unless you want try the North Korean model? This is America & we don’t need to be controlled by the government like a micromanaged child. The fact is people being responsible for their own actions is the only option. We know people who are more educated make better decisions, so I would say a requirement for increased driver education & the laws would accomplish far better results, be more affective, the cost to benefit ratio would far out weigh, what’s seemingly just your excuse to parrot an unoriginal rightwing statement you heard on the news about defunding the police. Instead of thinking objectively & being accountable for one’s self, it’s someone else’s job to control other people. Your excuse is self-serving & the interjection of your dissatisfaction & obvious opposition to defunding/a small % of the budget for police or the BLM civil rights movement is entirely irrelevant to the situation. If there has to be a choice with money I’d rather have 1 less officer who makes a mistake, then a loss of innocent life & the affect not only to the victim, the family’s but now the officer has to live with a lifetime of whatever psychological trauma & everything that comes with. I like to think a good person killing an innocent person isn’t easy. The officer didn’t have the training to deal with whatever situation, you want to sentence him to potentially a lifetime prison sentence of his mind? That’s taking care of the people who protect and serve you? Think for yourself tribesman read the constitution cause I want to be free. Sometimes the weight of life crushes us, together we share the weight on our shoulders & we hold up the world .
