Palmdale awarded $500,000 LEAP grant

by The AV Times Staff • September 15, 2020

PALMDALE – The city of Palmdale has been awarded $500,000 in grant funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development under the Local Early Action Planning Grants Program (LEAP).

The LEAP Program is the second phase of money allocated by California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) under the Building Homes and Jobs Act (SB 2). Palmdale also received $310,000 under the SB2 Planning Grants from HCD earlier this year.

“This grant will help Palmdale take the necessary next steps in updating our General Plan and planning Palmdale’s future,” said Mayor Steve Hofbauer. “As our city continues to grow and flourish, this funding will be key in enabling us to prepare and provide for the housing needs of the next generation work force and residents in general.”

The funds will be used to fund the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and housing element of the General Plan Update, multi-family housing design standards, and comprehensive update to Palmdale Municipal Code Title 17 Zoning to reflect the changes required by completion of the update to the City’s General Plan.

“This is a real win for our City to help us achieve our future housing needs,” said Palmdale City Manager J.J. Murphy. “I am very proud of the hard work put in by our City staff in seeking out and making the necessary preparations to secure this grant.”

The LEAP Program reflects the state’s commitment to work in partnership with local governments to address California’s critical housing needs. Palmdale prepared its application in response to the Notice of Funding Availability released on Jan. 27, 2020.

For more information, call Palmdale’s Planning Division at 661-267-5200.

They cannot use this money for anything but housing! The phony/fireman Mayor and the rest of the pretend Republicans are gonna be tested with the 3/4 sales tax, Where does each stand on the local tax increase. Our phony Republicans is Lancaster promoted the homeless tax so anything is possible with that group of money grubbers. Taxpayers Beware!

The need is for low income housing, not necessarily Senior housing alone. I am a disabled Senior on SSD. Senior housing is very expensive. LOW INCOME HOUSING.
    HOUSING WHERE THE LANDLORD CAN’T
JUST GO UP ON RENT WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT. I get $1800 PER MONTH, $1112 FROM SSD, THE REST IS FROM MY LACOE PENSION, MY RENT IS $1165. I do not get food stamps. My landlord got caught hiking up the rent to much, too often.
I sought help, there was none.
    Moving is expensive and hard.
LOW INCOME HOUSING NEEDED FOR ALL !!

I’m sorry to hear that. A new law passed last year, SSI/SSDI recipients can apply for and often can qualify for food stamps. Apply on Los Angeles County DPSS website.

I am glad the city received this grant.I just hope that all that applied for the mortgage assistance program that was open from August 31-September 10 , 2020 will get the funds they need to remain living in the city of Palmdale to enjoy the beautification of our community. At this time only 2 groups are getting funded ,and the need has not extended to the other 18 plus group waiting for assistance due to the impact of Covid -19 on our families .

Our Mayor may not be as dynamic as the Lancaster Mayor and he may have never fought a real fire but he is still a elected official that wants Palmdale to succeed. I alway thought he was a better councilman than Mayor. I like the Councilwoman for Mayor

We should make it ilegal for home builders to make contracts with solar panel companies as solar panel companies are charging up to 80% premiums and we the buyers can’t purchase the solar system with a more competitive company due to their contracts. I’m soon to be a Palmdale home owner and the solar companies all g with the home builders are taking advantage of California’s new solar requirements.
