Defining the differences: CBD topicals

by Opinion • August 20, 2020

By Johnny Pitt

CBD topicals are among the most common types of CBD available at most dispensaries, but there are almost too many types to choose from. It is one thing to be told to get a CBD topical, but an entirely different thing to try and choose one.

What are the differences between the available types of CBD topicals, and which one should you choose?

What Are CBD Topicals?

Before we can properly go through all of the different types of CBD topicals available, we need to understand what CBD topicals are, to begin with.

CBD topicals are any CBD product designed to apply topically. You apply them to your skin or an affected area. Alongside CBD oil, CBD topicals tend to contain other ingredients like creams and plant extracts.

These other ingredients are designed to help promote ease of absorption into the skin, as well as pleasant aromas. For example, many CBD topicals are made with aloe vera or shea butter, soft substances to make your skin feel great. Some products might include herbs, or fruit extracts, or even things like chocolate or coffee.

Thus, CBD topicals tend to be the best smelling and most intriguing of all CBD-related products because they will leave their scent for a long time after applying them.

But are all CBD topicals an essential cream you apply to your skin? What are the different types of CBD topicals that are available?

CBD Balm – The Healing Solution

CBD balm is a common form of topical, and easily one of the most useful. CBD balms are designed to aid in the healing process, whether through direct wound treatment or to soothe sore and aching muscles.

Alongside the CBD oil within the CBD balm, there are also other pain-relieving herbs and ingredients. Common ingredients include natural painkillers like willow bark, as well as things like lavender and other calming ingredients for your health.

CBD balm tends to be pretty thick and is designed to be rubbed on and left there. If you’re looking for something a bit smoother and softer, then you should go for it…

CBD Salve – A Textural Difference

CBD salve is a pretty similar product to CBD balms, with the primary difference between them being that salves are much softer. They are more flexible, better for rubbing thoroughly into the skin. They are designed for ease of use rather than a thick coating.

CBD salves are great for cuts and minor injuries where you don’t want the balm sticking around too long on your skin.

CBD Lotion – The Wetter, Easier Choice

CBD lotion is perhaps the most common form of CBD topical because it is available in so many different forms. Compared to other types of CBD topicals, the critical physical quality of CBD lotion is its higher water content. The extra water makes it a lot easier to use, giving it the consistency of other lotions.

This lets you easily rub it all over your body wherever you want it, without risk of sticking or causing annoyances.

CBD lotions also contain a lot of extra moisturizing ingredients that leave your skin feeling suitable for longer. This makes it a great option not only for dosing yourself with CBD oil, but also for giving your skin a much-needed boost.

Final Thoughts on Defining the Differences Between CBD Topicals

CBD topicals, and indeed all CBD products, can only be roughly grouped into categories. The labels only go so far in providing explanations and specific definitions for what a product is.

This is due to the sheer range of products you can have in each example. CBD edibles encompass everything from a plain CBD gummy to a CBD cookie, yet both are still CBD edibles.

It is the same case with CBD topicals; every possible permutation topical product is available. As long as it is something you rub on your body physically, and it contains CBD, it is a CBD topical.

To make things a bit easier when trying to decide which to buy, go to reputable, trusted shop like Provacan.

While there are plenty of options available, choosing to buy only from a well-loved and respected brand means that you will be getting what you pay for. Additionally, it is going to be a lot easier to know the precise CBD content of your chosen product, thanks to provided lab reports.

Wherever you decide to shop for CBD topicals, make sure that you only buy them from brands you know you can trust.
