Governor closes bars, orders seniors to stay home throughout California

by City News Service • March 16, 2020

Governor Gavin Newsom [Image via Wiki]
LOS ANGELES – Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday ordered all bars in California to close temporarily due to the coronavirus, directed restaurants to reduce their capacity by roughly half, and said all state residents older than 65 are required to self-quarantine in their homes.

Newsom also announced that six people in the state have died of COVID- 19, the disease caused by the virus. The number of those confirmed to have been infected in the state rose to 338 Sunday, a 14 percent increase from the prior day.

The restrictions on older Californians is due to the fact that they are the group most at-risk for the disease. Sunday’s order says that community members over the age of 65 should enter into a state of home isolation as they are a high-risk group.

When pressed about whether he was prepared to enforce the order, Newsom said he didn’t think it would come to that, and expressed confidence that the public, businesses and local governments would follow the directive.

The governor made it clear, however, that he has the authority to enforce the order if necessary.

“We’ll exercise the appropriate authority in consultation with the experts, with an eye on public health and public safety,” Newsom said. “We are working in concert, day in and day out, with not just our federal partners but other states, looking at best practices around the world. We have teams that are (conducting) a detailed review of what worked and what didn’t work in China, worked and didn’t work in Singapore, what’s going on in Italy, what’s not going on, based upon some of the headlines. Same with France, same with Spain, we have people on the ground, literally, … providing real-time information, we have our legal team … we’re working with the FAA on flights, repatriation … All this is part of our all-hazards strategies.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis called for calm.

“Now is the time for prevention, not panic,” Holis said after the governor’s announcement. “I urge everyone in Los Angeles County to remain calm as we face the challenge of containing the spread of COVID-19. I want to reassure everyone that LA County public health officials are working diligently to preserve the public’s health.”

Newsom said more guidance would come Tuesday regarding schools that remain open, saying he was especially focused on providing support to low- income families.

If we are required to stay home, how are we supposed to go to work, go grocery shopping, go to our doctor’s appointments, etc. I don’t think a governor can order that without declaring Martial Law.

Ron: Donald Trump is saying the same thing as Governor Newsom so please stop making this a political issue.

Oh but I bet the Gov. Ok with people running across the border. Only God knows what diseases they are bringing over. Like Chicken pox, measles, T.B. , Tyfoid fever, etc.

      Were you never immunized?
Serving in the military I got immunizations on top of what I got as a kid.
Besides, we all know the real danger is their illegal fireworks.

Regular Flu kills about 37,000 to 45,000 each year. People shrug it off and go on with life.

How is the Gov. going to enforce THIS? We’re talking every bar, restaurant, nightclub in the State. Lawyers will be all over this. Complete overreaction. This will most likely pass by May, June. Things will be back to normal by Summer.

I don’t know why everybody is freaking out on this. In 2010 Swine flu killed 17000 in the United States in one year. We didn’t shut everything down. What is different about this? Obama didn’t say anything about it until 1000people died. He told us not to panic and nothing shut down. Why is this different?

I guess you listen to everything the Fake News CNN tells you. We’re all going to die and it’s Trumps fault.

          You got that right, Ron.

The idiot incompetent unfit Trump kept saying it was a hoax till somebody got to him recently. The virus was known back in December and your fool of a president ignored the warnings.

Plus, the idiot you voted for disbanded the pandemic response team President Obama put in place. So, there’s that.

Grow a brain, Ron. Your foolish comments here are an example of the typical Trump voter. Trump will be out of office next year and likely indicted multiple times for his crimes.

You be sure and be here when that happens.

        Good answer, Alexis!

Ron, I get the feeling of overreaction. I’ve had it, too. The death rate percentage is very low, so why worry so much, right? I’m not going to get into the whole explanation about the Covid-19 virus beyond the notation that, current information shows that the average length of time for the infection to pass for most minor cases is about 2-3 weeks. Since the first week, you may not even know that you have the virus, while still able to spread it, taking the time to shut everything down now, before it all gets stupid, allows for a slower spread of the little bugger and protects the abilities of those who get seriously hit to get hospital access, due to a slower spread.

…not to mention protecting against contracting and spreading said bugger to someone that you love that is at risk…. How would you feel, then?

People ran to the stores to buy up everything, leaving so many people without the ability to eat for the week…. yet you still see people out and about like any other day. People don’t have any common sense nor decency. Hunger and survival instincts are going to kick in, causing a lot more problems than a virus. If you are fortunate enough to have friends and family, or money in your bank account, it is absolutely unnecessary to hoard supplies.

I went to several supermarkets and the thing I noticed is really, really fat people with overflowing shopping carts. I guess that will last them a day or two.

I’m just wondering if they go back to the stores over and over and load up more than necessary. The stores are still stocking stuff so in a week or so the hoarders will have stocked up so things can get back to normal.

Wait. Nothing is normal in the Trump era. You were warned.

Once again, California is trying to host nanny government. Coronavirus is all over the news. Let the public decide if they wish to take the risk. And how do you enforce this. What is the penalty? If I want to go to a bar on St Patricks Day and have a beer with my friends, so be it. It should be our choice.

Look Typhoid Mary. A contagious disease requires the government to step to protect others from your foolish behavior. Like when you got an STD, the doctor informed the health department.

We don’t care about you. It’s those who you will infect that we care about even if you don’t.
