Sheriff’s cruiser collides with another vehicle in Palmdale

by City News Service • March 13, 2020

PALMDALE – A sheriff’s deputy who was responding to a call collided with another vehicle at a Palmdale intersection, but both drivers suffered only minor injuries, a lieutenant said.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. Friday, March 13, at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Avenue R, said sheriff’s Lt. Steve Bejong.

“The deputy was responding to a call about a person screaming,” Bejong said. “He was traveling with lights and sirens on. He slowed to clear the intersection, but the other driver had a green light and the collision occurred.”

Both vehicles were totaled, Bejong said.

“Both drivers complained of pain,” he said. “The other driver declined to go to the hospital. Our deputy was transported to a hospital and has since gone home.”

The crash remains under investigation, he said.

The sheriff department units in the Antelope and Victor Valleys all drive too fast, especially on Code 3 responses. Compared to the Fire Department and Ambulance Services, the sheriff units are the worst drivers. I saw a near head-on in Hesperia a few weeks ago when a sheriff unit came out of a blind side street, turned a wide right, and nearly hit an oncoming vehicle head-on. It’s far past time for the command staff of the respective sheriff departments to tone down the Code 3 responses. It’s better to take a little longer to get to the incident than kill or injure someone on the way. Both the San Bernardino and L.A. County Sheriff Departments have had at least one Code 3 accident in the past month in the high desert.

Hesperia is in San Bernardino county…. How does that related to this accident that happened in Los Angeles County between a Los Angeles County Sheriff who was responding “code-3” (lights and sirens) and a driver who clearly failed to yield?
