2-way stop sign says
It was not mentioned earlier, but for those who don’t know, this intersection is a 2-way stop. Cars traveling on 70th street must come to a stop, whereas as cars on J do not come to a stop.
It is common to see folks stopped at a 2-way stop sign assume it’s a 4-way (all-way) stop sign and proceed to pull out into oncoming traffic, assuming they’ll stop.
I have no idea if this is a case of that. Just added context to the area
Tim Scott says
There is definitely a feeling of randomness to the intersections out there. A four way stop here, stop just for the east west traffic there, just for the north south traffic at that one; no apparent rhyme or reason to it. If you have to drive out there keep in mind that the authority that scattered those stop signs did you no favors, and they don’t make it easy for the other drivers either so don’t count on those other drivers too much.
Speed Racer says
By the looks of that stretch of street, it looks as though one could drive as fast as one wanted to.

I agree with solar powered flashing lights around the signs for FNG’s
However, If people actually stop at the signs and look left and right prior to proceeding, they may actually see the person that’s going to blow through the sign without stopping.
Rego says
What are FNG’s?
Tim Scott says
New Guys, who aren’t familiar enough with where the stop signs are or aren’t. You can guess the F.
This is as opposed to people like me, who take years to adapt when a new stop sign is put in. There is no question that they did everything they could to make it obvious and visible, but I’m a risk to blow through the stop sign at Ave Q every time I go down 40th East. Too many decades of muscle memory.

People keep going thru the stop signs out here because they arent always easy to see the signs they need to put flashing lights or a speed bump just before the stop sign or some kinda attention alert that a stop sign is coming up . The signs are even harder to see after dark out in Antelope Valley also people are driving long roads out here and they get comfortable then all of a sudden a stop sign pops up. The city needs to put better ways for these signs also the accidents keep happening at the sane locations over and over so why is sonething being done about this invest in better stop signs and save some lives it’s worth the money.
Tim Scott says
Most of the worst recurring deathtraps are out in the county and the cities can’t really do anything about them. Perhaps if the AV stopped trying to play ‘last act of defiance’ by sending the lone Republican to the county board of supervisors as their representative the board would be less inclined to ignore even the most basic requests that we make.

I figured you would figure a way to politicize this. You have to get out more and realize there is much more to life than obsessing over politics.
Tim Scott says
LOL…of course my fan club obsesses over me about politicizing this…when all I did was respond to someone yammering about how “the city ought…” Where were you when Patricia was politicizing? Is she just not your type?
William says
Definition of politics
1a : the art or science of government – from Merriam-Webster.
Most everything we do in public has something to do with “politics”.
You do know that the government is responsible for the roads and the stop signs, don’t you?
When you read an article having to do with stop signs and then post a comment, you’ve already entered the world of politics (government) whether you realize it or not.
Kathy says
Government is doing a lousy job of governing.
Cautious says
I pass through this intersection on a regular basis, and I am always seeing cars traveing north on 70th Street East that cross Avenue J at full highway speed, completely disregarding the stop sign and blowing right through it. It was simply a matter of time before this was going to happen. We are always cautious at this intersection when we’re driving on Avenue J because of that, and we make sure that we know that the car that we see traveling on 70th Street East is really going to obey the stop sign and actually stop at the intersection.
