Vallarta Supermarkets donates $110,000 to aid Latino students

by The AV Times Staff • May 1, 2018

LOS ANGELES – Vallarta Supermarkets Tuesday announced a $110,000 contribution to education organizations to support Latino students seeking a university or college education in markets that the company serves.

“Given our company’s immigrant roots, we recognize the importance of family, hard work and education. Consequently, we made a decision to contribute $110,000 toward scholarships for Latino students,” stated Rick Castillo, marketing director of Vallarta Supermarkets. “Many of our customers came to this country seeking the American dream of a better life for themselves and their families. We want to help our customers obtain that dream.”

The largest contribution — $25,000 — is earmarked for the TELACU Education Foundation, and the second-largest — $15,000 — is going to Antelope Valley College.

The other recipients, which will each receive $10,000, are:

— The Hispanic Education Foundation;

— Fresno Unified School District;

— Oxnard Community College;

— Youth Leaders Education Foundation;

— Hancock College in Santa Maria;

— Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista; and

— Victor Valley College in Victorville.

“We will be using multiple platforms to inform our customers of our scholarship contributions in local markets, including Vallarta Supermarket’s website, social media and employee briefings,” Castillo added. “We hope our customers will take advantage of this wonderful educational opportunity.”

Vallarta Supermarkets’ 50 stores are located in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Kern, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Tulare and Fresno counties.

    How Hispanics are performing segmentation to differentiate whites is, by language. Posting a job prerequisite for Spanish speakers, Hispanics assume all individuals who do not speak Spanish, were Trump voters. And, their applications are summarily discarded.

      This is the dumbest comment I’ve read all day by far, congratulations you literally assumed whatever hispanic thinks LOLOLOL

      It’s more complicated. I’m Mexican-American. My father is a very Christian man and supports Trump because of his VP, Mike Pence. I have aunts and uncles who are extremely pro-life and are Trump supporters. Trump won just as much of the Hispanic vote as did Romney and McCain.

      I would imagine that the owners of Vallarta, who are very wealthy, are probably fans of the corporate tax cut.

    Attention all whiners.

    There seems to be some confusion. Hispanic isn’t a race. Most Hispanics are mestizo (i.e. mixed Native and Spanish ancestry), but there are White Hispanics (of Spanish origin) and Black Hispanics too. Vallarta does not discriminate on the basis of race. They simply prefer people with some level of Spanish. You go to Chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley and they have a preference for Chinese-speakers. Restaurants in Koreatown with a lot of Korean-speaking customers like to hire Korean speakers. This is a FREE MARKET, profit-driven choice.

    But as we’ve seen, Republicans only care about the free market when it suits them.

      @Cynic…Thank you for an intelligent, factual comment. Yes, there are many races within the Latino (Hispanic) community including white, black, Native Indian, etc.

      I dislike going out for Chinese food and find out it’s being prepared by Hispanics.

      Same applies when I go out for Mexican food and I’m waiting on by a white girl

      These conditions basically make it mutt food.

        May 3, 2018 at 7:45 pm

        What if the Mexican cook was trained in China at a traditional kitchen?
        And the Chinese cook was trained to follow a recipe for Americanized faux Chinese food?
        Oh wait would both of those be cultural appropriation?
        Crap, this world is too friggin’ complicated. I think I will just enjoy what I enjoy and avoid what I do not enjoy.

          That just might be some great Kung Pow Chicken.

          IMO The Mexicans in the Antelope Valley just don’t put enough peppers in it. kinda odd when I think about it.

          When I want good Mexican food I go to La Cabana in Acton.

          When I want to watch mice run across the back of the booth while I sip my Margareta I go El Toreo at 10th West and Palmdale.

      So I assume that if a business like ikea offered a scholarship to scandanavians only you would have no problem. Or a ca specific scholarship for whites of non hispanic decent since they are a minority

    To all commenters, especially Ron, that have nothing but complaining remarks about a positive contribution; here are some facts: The Gonzales family and Vallarta supermarkets makes countless donations and contributions to local charities, churches, schools, hospitals, after school programs, city organizations, and more. Now, please find something to be thankful for today, and you do something positive for your community.

    Typical. I tried to apply for a job there and they asked if I spoke Spanish. I told them no and they proceeded to tell me that they are ok with discriminating against anyone who doesn’t speak Spanish. Besides being a front for their drug running, they also won’t hire Black or White people. Ive been in all the stores out here.

      May 2, 2018 at 6:17 pm

      LOL…let me paraphrase what you just said:

      “Whhhhhhaaaaaaahhhh!!!! They asked if I met the job requirements and I said no so they didn’t hire me!!!!! Whhhhhhaaaaaahhhh! It’s just not fair! I shouldn’t have to have the skills for the position I’m applying for!!!! Whhhhaaaaaahhhh!!!!”

      That about sums it up.

  7. Jason says

      BS. The Vallarta right around the corner from me has plenty of white employees. Their only requirement is that you speak Spanish.

    • Bob says

      May 2, 2018 at 7:07 am

      It took me a minute to get that ;)

      I very rarely go East of 10th St West. Maybe 4 times a year at best. But when I do I am in complete shock when I see how the area has changed.

      I went to the auto parts store down by 30th East and the guy helping me asked “You’re not from around here are you?”. I laughed and told him I’ve lived here my entire life and grew up just across the street.

      When are we going to see a business donating to down and out WASP students seeking a university or college education? Would it be racist?

      • Alexis says

    • John Carter says

      Keep in mind – Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a skin color. Hispanic can be black, white, brown, red, or whatever color.

    • Ron says

      May 2, 2018 at 11:29 am

      Complete double standard.

      • Tim Scott says

        May 2, 2018 at 6:20 pm

        I’d be more inclined to trust your judgement on double standards if I were convinced that you can count to two.

        • Ron says

          May 2, 2018 at 7:38 pm

          So it’s ok to discriminate if your non white. Only Whites have to be diverse.

          • Tim Scott says

            May 2, 2018 at 8:43 pm

            No, it’s okay to “discriminate” if you aren’t qualified for the job. Like, for example, I can’t think of a job I would hire you for, since I don’t like doorstops that have to be fed. I just use a brick.

    I like Vallarta markets, it’s like taking a trip to Mexico without having to be concerned with being robbed or murdered in a 3rd World Country-

    Love the Huvos ranchero breakfast

    Might have to head over there right now
