County funds security guards at public hygiene sites

by City News Service • March 14, 2018

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved funding for security guards to be posted around the clock at county toilets to be installed near high-need homeless encampments at four sites, including the community of East Pearblossom.

Supervisor Hilda Solis has championed portable toilets with handwashing stations.

“Unfortunately, those experiencing homelessness have been disproportionately impacted by the Hepatitis A outbreak,” Solis said. “However, the county is responding quickly to combat this outbreak. Having an area to wash your hands is a human rights issue, and today we are expanding our ability to ensure that our at-risk communities have access to this basic human need in a safe environment.”

Public hygiene facilities are slated for East Pearblossom and three other sites, including West Carson, Whittier Narrows Park in El Monte, and along the Los Angeles River near the Century (105) Freeway.

The money covers security for up to six months.

Security guards posted at port-a-potties to keep the peace, where the homeless congregate. This is being done in other cities too.

I am surprised too – but homeless encampments seem to pop up anywhere… whats more surprising is we need a security guard to protect a toilet… most likely because many homeless use it as a place to get high.

Privacy is a valuable thing…until you are under attack. Then you want assistance, or at least a witness. Unfortunately the privacy of a public use bathroom can become unwanted very suddenly.

Somewhere out in East Pearblossom. Maybe Hwy 138 and Avenue 136 East. Pretty cold out there. I don’t see how they can take the cold but one does what they have to. I hope the security works out for them. I sure wouldn’t want to be bothered while relieving myself.
