Palmdale named in ‘Top 36 Safest Cities in California’

by The AV Times Staff • December 23, 2017

PALMDALE – The city of Palmdale was ranked the 35th safest city (population 50,000 and up) in California, according to a recent study by SafeHome.org.

Of the 177 scored cities in California, the top 25 safest cities on the list attained a Safety Score of at least 80. Palmdale’s score was 82.05

According to SafeHome.org’s Community Relations Manager Danita Abram, “there have been similar studies in the past; however we went a step further and used a variety of data sources and combination of the FBI’s latest report of how many and what types of crimes occurred, crime trends and other data points like law enforcement officer ratio, demographics, population density, unemployment rate, income, education level, etc. to come up with our scoring.”

Yorba Linda ranked as the number one safest city, with a Safety Score of 90.6.  To see the complete list, visit https://www.safehome.org/safest-cities/ca/.

Lol they must not have surveyed anybody on the Eastside or taken a drive down good ol’ Palmdale blvd.

They obviously took a drive down the good ol’ BLVD, though. That would explain the abysmal score that Rex’s city received.

THIS REVIEW BY SAFE HOMES IS PROPAGANDA. LOOK AROUND YOU. YOUR NEIGHBORS, PEOPLE YOU SEE AT THE MARKET OR GAS STATION. I LIVED IN PALMDALE FOR 10 YEARS, AND DEALT WITH BURGLARIES ON A CONSTANT BASIS. MY ENTIRE PALMDALE EXPERIENCE WAS A WASTE OF LIFE. IF THE QUALITY OF PEOPLE WERE BETTER PALMDALE WOULD BE A WONDERFUL PLACE. BUT THAT IS A “FAIRY TALE” , PALMDALE WILL NOT TURN INTO A GOOD PLACE IN MY LIFETIME, IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 80 YEARS. I HAVE BEEN COMING TO PALMDALE SINCE 1993. ONLY PLACE I WILL GO NOW IS MOUNTAIN HIGH IN WRIGHTWOOD. DON’T EVEN WASTE MY TIME IN PALMDALE ANYMORE. GARBAGE PEOPLE, SPIT OUT INTO THE DESERT. REAL REAL SAD PATHETIC PLACE

I love my neighbors in Palmdale. Some of the nicest people I have ever met, and I have lived in many different places.

Please stay in where you. Would you mind taking Foolco with you?

Do you really have to go to Wrightwood? Maybe you could stay even further away. And not even visit related web sites and leave comments. Just think how sweet the revenge of knowing how badly we are all missing you.

It looks to me as if the bigger picture in all of this back and forth is being totally missed. Does it really matter the exact number? Bottom line, we’re not the worst, but far from the best is what the overall understanding is. How do we get to 35, 34, 33… #1 is the real conversation. I credit AV Times for bringing stories showing some of the positive about the AV. I’m an LA transplant for the last 15 years, 11 in Palmdale. I hadn’t seen more peaceful areas in years, in comparison to what goes on in the city. I’ve not had any problem with anyone the entire time I’ve been here, property crime, or otherwise. I’ve seen some things though nothing compared to the city.
Everyone’s experience here is different ultimately, but a common goal is how and what to improve. I’m glad to see stories like this also, because it helps to validate you encouraging your friends and other people like you, that this is actually not such a bad place to live for good quality, hard working to even affluent people like you. Communities that work to build each other up tend to have a lot less problems than those that work to tear each other down more. Get to know the people in your community and work together!

Actually, if you apply a little perspective…somewhere in the thirties out of nearly 500 is pretty good. I agree with you though. Arguing about where we stand is clearly secondary to working to make things better.

Palmdale and Lancaster wins the Looney state of Kalifornia distinction of being the LARGEST GHETTO IN KALIFORNIA award. Gangs from South Central Los Angeles did their best to trash the entire Antelope Valley leading to this award. Murder rate second only to Chicago, filthest streets anywhere.

Have you been to a real ghetto? Lol..

When you just look at crime within city limits you’re not looking at the real picture.

My chances of becoming a victim in Palmdale; (1 in 188), Ca. (1 in 235). Crime index for Palmdale (27) 100 being safest. My chances of becoming a victim of violent crime in Lancaster (1 in 158), Ca. (1 in 235). Crime index for Lancaster (19), 100 being safest. Even though Palmdale is a little better than Lancaster, crime is still a big problem in both cities. Source (neighborhoodscout). Numbers came from the same sources as this article, but yet so different. SafeWise doesn’t even rate Palmdale in the top 100 safest cities. Numbers came from the same sources as this article. Amazing!

According to Safewise, not every city responded to their survey. Maybe Lancaster and Palndale were two of those cities? It also had Santa Clarita ranked lower than Fillmore even though Fillmore had five times more violent crimes. Go figure.

          The LASD reports are straightforward.

Alexis, try the FBI stats sometime. Unless you think somehow Palmdale manipulated them as George does.

They’re getting desperate on Fern Street. How many murders did we have in Lancaster this year? After Rex got rid of all the pit bulls and gangs, and spent another million on LEAPS you would think things would improve.

  10. AV Educator says

    December 23, 2017 at 7:11 pm

This only lowers the credibility of the AV times… Everyone who lives out here knows better than to believe this “study”. I’d rather have people decide to report every little property crime than have an excessive violent crime rate. Imagine how many property crimes are just accepted and not reported in the Antelope Valley… after all, the sheriff probably has bigger things to follow up on besides grand theft iPhone.

    • Tim Scott says

      December 23, 2017 at 7:43 pm

How does a study done by Safehome.org lower the credibility of the AVTimes?

      • Alexis says

        December 24, 2017 at 6:07 am

Tim, if The A.V. Times ran the article using SafeWise instead of Safehome, Palmdale wouldn’t even be in the top fifty of the safest cities. My point, Tim, is that you can go to other sites (pick one), and there will be different stats.

        • Tim Scott says

          December 24, 2017 at 2:03 pm

The AVTimes reported that “Safehome rated …” That was accurate. They did not claim “Safehome is the only rating there is” or that it is the best, or anything else. Their credibility seems completely intact here.

As to your point that there are indeed other rating sources and they are not all the same…change your name to Sherlock.

          • George says

            December 25, 2017 at 3:23 pm

          • Tim Scott says

            December 25, 2017 at 3:32 pm

I’m sure they just wrote a quick article around the press release that the city sent them, but that’s not out of the ordinary. Again, if they had pretended this was THE comprehensive study on the subject it would be different, but the did not. They included a link so we could check the source material and methodology if we were so inclined. What more do you expect?

          • William says

            December 25, 2017 at 3:34 pm

Who cherry picked? For what purpose? Did you even read it? Do you think this study was done by Palmdale? You have to be on one of Rex’s commission or one of his toadies. You ain’t so bright.

These people think Lancaster is ‘better than ever’.

            Heaven help us.

          • George says

            December 26, 2017 at 10:03 am

William, you need to look into the way studies and statistics are figured. An organization wants to sway things a certain way, they look at studies that do that for them. There are plenty of ongoing studies to pick from. This one was chosen because of the way it had the information compiled.

Ok, someone disagrees with you, let the name calling begin.

          • William says

            December 26, 2017 at 11:35 am

George, thank you for enlightening those of us whom you seem to believe cannot think for ourselves. You must obviously work for the organization that did the study and know how and why they slanted it. If the were slanting it in Palmdale’s favor do you the no they would at least go for the top twenty?

Hope your next commissioner meeting goes well. What next after LEAPS? A robotic mole that keeps us safe from underground?

            December 28, 2017 at 6:13 pm

No William, wrong again. I worked in and for Palmdale for 28 years. I think it is a much better place than that city to the north. I always figured the eye in the sky had a personal agenda…..

You are welcome for the enlightenment. I try to be a helper to those in need.

      • Alexis says

        December 24, 2017 at 2:30 pm

It is a biased article; picking stats that favor Palmdale. Most news is biased, Tim. That’s why anyone that cares about the truth should always check as many sources as possible. AV Educator understands this.

        • Vic says

          December 24, 2017 at 3:31 pm

Alexis, you are as ignorant at the so called AV Educator. This is a study by a company. If you don’t agree with what they came up with, it does not invalidate the study. There is no bias. Their numbers are based in their criteria. You might not agree with their criteria but please do not claim they are false when you haven’t done a study. You come across as ignorant.

          • Tim Scott says

            December 25, 2017 at 12:37 am

            December 25, 2017 at 7:26 am

She’s the smart one here. Both of you choose to believe a study that favors Palmdale instead of a study that doesn’t favor Palmdale. Look up the word “bias.” As for you Tim, since you started posting a few years back, you have done nothing but leave a trail of hate. You’re the problem, Tim; not Alexis, or George, or Glenn, or the very long list of others you have verbally abused. By the way, she is not a ditz. You resort to name-calling as a way to lift yourself above others, but only makes you small.

          • Tim Scott says

            December 25, 2017 at 10:08 am

I didn’t “choose to believe” any particular study. I pointed out that the AVTimes accurately reported the results of ONE study and asked how doing that “lowered their credibility.” So far there hasn’t been an answer from “AVEducator.” I would guess because they have none, since their original complaint was irrational.

Because she has decided to play “attack dog,” Alexis tried to veer off into realms unknown. Since she has been the self appointed attack dog for as long as I’ve been around here I treated her appropriately and kicked her in the teeth.

Now, since “PalmdaleVet” is a ‘brand new out of the blue’ screen name, and so far you’ve contributed nothing but, as you put it “making yourself look small,” I will leave you to it.

          • PalmdaleVet says

            December 25, 2017 at 11:44 am

I don’t comment often, Tim, but for you I make an exception. She’s the one kicking you in the teeth, and you need it. I am not a “brand new out of the blue” screen name Tim. I just haven’t posted in a while; been busy in another country. I am here to tell you that you don’t contribute anything but attacking other commenters. Keep up the your intelligent posts Alexis.

Palmdale Vet, thank you for your service.

It is too bad you have chosen the same path of ignorance and denial as Alexis. Read the study. Read it and the criteria. It is what it is. Sorry that it does not fit your pre conceived biases.

          • PalmdaleVet says

            December 25, 2017 at 2:19 pm

It is too bad, Vic, that you can’t see a biased article when it’s presented to you. I, like Alexis, and others actually read other sources to try to come up with the truth. A pre-conceived bias is when you read an article like this one that tells you what you want to hear (positive), instead of reading other sources that give you a more well rounded view, approaching things with an open mind. Putting your faith in one article, calling it true is your problem. But you’re definitely not alone, Vic. You’re the one in denial. Why didn’t The A.V. Times run the article using SafeWise or other sources that don’t paint Palmdale in such a favorable light? Because this online newspaper is in Palmdale. If they ran another source (negative) they would receive such backlash that it would hurt them. You don’t see that, Vic.

          • PalmdaleVet says

            December 25, 2017 at 2:29 pm

Now go to another source, Vic, and read the study. Read it and the criteria. It is what it is. You will see if you took the time, that there are other studies and criteria that come up with different stats for Palmdale. But you won’t take that time because it will show you what you don’t want to see. Your choice to live in your little bubble, placing faith in one article. This horse has been beaten enough. Remain in your bias. You’re not alone.

          • Tim Scott says

            December 25, 2017 at 2:42 pm

Nobody ever said this study was the “one definitive source.” It’s just the source that THIS ARTICLE is about. Nobody ever denied that other sources might provide different results. If the article had been billed as a “comprehensive comparison of various safety ratings for cities” it would have been a disappointment, but it was not billed that way.

Meanwhile, if you want to “kick my teeth in” here you are gonna need to stop making obviously false accusations founded on nothing. And if you want to defend ditzy Alexis in person I’m easy to find, hero.

          • Vic says

            December 25, 2017 at 3:49 pm

Correct, Tim. No one has claimed this is the be all and end all study. If anyone would take the time to look into it and the criteria used they would see how they arrived at their scores.

The LASD releases crime stats periodically. The AV Times will probably report on it when they do. If the numbers don’t fit pre-conceived biases, what will the naysayers claim this time?

            Are people really this dense?

          • Laughing says

            December 25, 2017 at 6:05 pm

The neat thing about statistics… Depending on bias a ‘researcher’ can make them represent whatever they want.
Ask yourselves this questions… who profits from these particular studies?
If you answered real estate agents, builders, and city tax collectors then you are a winner.

        • AV says

          December 28, 2017 at 9:05 am

It is not a biased article. It is an article that states what a study found.

Whether the study is biased is up for debate, but it would be highly unlikely for a national company.

For all the haters, I am glad I live in the AV rather than places like Pacoima, Oakland, Sylmar, Tujunga, South LA, Compton, Blythe, Needles, Stockton, Richmond, and many other cities.

Palmdale with 830 violent crimes per 159,613 is safer than Carlsbad with 172 violent crimes per 113,972? I looked at the metrics used and income level, education level, and unemployment are all included in the calculation.

    • Tim Scott says

      December 23, 2017 at 6:34 pm

They actually scored out a tie.

Did you notice this in the methodology: “The city’s crime trends are also considered; in other words, cities where crime is on the decline are given a higher Safety Score and vice-versa.”

Carlsbad somehow had the extraordinary 21% increase in property crimes, and that had to hurt their overall score pretty badly. I’d guess it was most likely an anomaly in reporting, because a wild crime wave in Carlsbad seems pretty unlikely..

Dang! P_almdale did decently. Lancaster slid though, places like Hesperia and Inglewood beat the city Rex rebuilt in his image.
