L.A. County votes to rename Columbus Day

by City News Service • October 4, 2017

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to eliminate all references to Columbus Day as a county holiday, designating Oct. 12 as Italian American Heritage Day and creating a new Indigenous Peoples Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day will fall on the second Monday of October, beginning no later than 2019.

Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl co-authored the motion.

“This action is about publicly recognizing that America’s ancestors, for centuries, oppressed certain minority groups,” Solis said.

Many speakers were emotional, recalling a history of genocide. Others said honoring Columbus served to distort what their children learn in school.

“There are a lot of generations of hurt,” Supervisor Janice Hahn said.

Solis said the change would not mean forgetting what Columbus had done, but would lead to a fuller understanding.

“This is not about erasing history,” Solis said. “I believe the full history and impact of Christopher Columbus should be taught to current and future generations. While we cannot change the past, we can realize the pain that millions suffered throughout our nation’s history, as well as the tremendous achievements of the original inhabitants of our continent.”

Columbus, long celebrated for his discovery of America, never actually set foot on North American soil. He landed instead in the Caribbean, where he was said to have committed atrocities against the native island people he found there.

Solis said the motion amounted to restorative justice. She pointed to the contributions of Native Americans to agriculture, medicine, music, language and art, while also noting that they suffer some of the highest percentages of depression, incarceration and infant mortality and have a lower life expectancy than other Americans.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger voted against the motion without comment.

So that must be you on the other side of my property in a chintzy tent typing through your government funded smartphone. I felt sympathetic at first so I wanted to bring you food and water. But then I saw the graffiti, the stolen shopping carts and the trash that you managed to accumulate and spread in front of my house so well that I decided to give the food to my dogs instead. Sell your smartphone and you’ll have comida for a two weeks Panch.

… our de facto Mexifornia day is 05 May (e.g., cinco de mayo), official day where Mexifornians inebriate themselves, proudly trash out the city in mock revolution, raising the Mexican flag over the American flag. Almost exactly 6 months later, Columbus day otherwise constitutes the ideal time of year, to commemorate state corruption, double-standards in jurisprudence, different laws for different people, wholesale law breaking, illegal behavior, and legalized crime wrought upon us, by sanctuary city politicians. I vote we rename Columbus day, sanctuary city day –

… the Mexifornia 5 (e.g., top 5 sanctuary city politicians of Mexifornia):

      1). Eric Garcetti –
      – e.g., the most pro-sanctuary city mayor in U.S. history; Garcetti redirects taxpayer revenue earmarked for the homeless, to subsidize illegal immigration into Los Angeles.
      2). Jerry Brown –
      – e.g., governor Moonbeam outspends on illegal immigrants, in excess of every governor in U.S. history.
      3). Antonio Villaregoso –
      – e.g., Mexifornia’s next governor in-waiting; Villarigoso is more loyal to Mexico, than America.
      4). Kamilla Harris –
      – e.g., Mexifornia’s senator, 100% bought and paid for, by pro-Mexican lobbiests; when they say jump, she replies, “how-high?”
      5). Nancy Pelosi –
      – e.g., Pelosi favors DACA, amnesty, free healthcare for illegals, and unrestricted illegal immigration (so long as they never settle in her congressional district, and everyone else but her has to pay for it).

Do you whine about celebrations of St Patrick’s Day? I’m not Irish, but I like St Patrick’s Day. I eat corned beef and cabbage, practice my brogue, wear green…good fun. I also enjoy a good Cinco de Mayo party. Heck, I’ve even been to a Chinese New Year party.

Let me guess though…since what you are really about here is ‘hate the brown people’ you have a particular problem with Cinco de Mayo parties. Get back in your racist closet.

You’re the whiner! Always whining about ALL Law Enforcement; always whining about those that don’t have the education level you have, by pointing out spelling and proper sentence structure errors. Whining about your taxes going to anyone suffering in a disaster ridden area, because the state is the color red. Covering your own bigoted mind-set by calling everyone that has a different opinion than you, a racist. Belittling those you perceive as non-worthy of your praise by telling them to die or commit suicide. You give new meaning to the word appalling, Tim. You have an autocratic attitude, and you justify your words by calling yourself as a liberal, which you are not.

Chinese New Year isn’t political. A Catholic-Irish religious holiday, St Patrick’s Day is apolitical. In celebration of Mexico’s deadbeat nation status, in default on its 19th century international financial obligations, the most politically decisive day in America, the mock revolution of its Hispanic community every cinco de mayo, in celebration of their loyalty to Mexico, and their deep-seeded hatred of America.

Hold up there, Tim. Your family outgrew bigotry! You posted about a year ago that nothing to ugly came out of your dad’s mouth. That’s the truth and you know it. Not to mention the rest of your family that you’ve slandered for all to see. Man, you’re all over the map.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 9, 2017 at 3:12 pm

I posted what a year ago? Whatever it was I would guess it made more sense than your recap.

As for my dad…yeah, bigot to the core, though he transitioned from religion to race. Notice that I didn’t say WHEN my family outgrew bigotry, just that we have.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 9, 2017 at 3:19 pm

Whatever I might have posted a year ago I guarantee it did not include “nothing to ugly” coming from my dad. The man had a slur for every ethnicity but mixed former northern European and multiples for most.

Meanwhile, you can’t see slander…that would be libel…if it weren’t true.

          • Alexis says

            October 9, 2017 at 4:20 pm

O.K., “nothing too ugly,” Tim. Correcting my spelling doesn’t change the fact that if you’re going to call someone else a bigot, it’s a good idea not to be one yourself. So your comment to Suzette applies to you and your bigoted family. You might be able to pick apart my spelling, etc., but you are still a hypocrite. By the way it’s “Juilliard” not “Julliard.” You can’t see slander???

          • Alexis says

            October 9, 2017 at 4:42 pm

Make up your mind, Tim. Were you lying when you said that “nothing too ugly” came out of your dad’s mouth? He’s deceased so he can’t sue you for libel. What about the rest of your family that you defame? Why are you telling Suzette your family outgrew bigotry, when you have clearly stated that they are bigot’s.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 9, 2017 at 5:16 pm

            Hmmmmm…perhaps I didn’t make this clear…or perhaps Alexis is a dim bulb…hard to tell.

            My ancestors were Orangemen.

My dad was a racist. I don’t believe that I would ever say that “nothing too bad” came out of his mouth.

I’m neither, though it takes effort because my dad did fill my head with slurs and I have to fight to keep them from coming out of my mouth sometimes.

My kids aren’t, and it comes pretty naturally to them.

So, my family outgrew it. The cycle is hard to break, but it can be done.

Meanwhile…no Alexis you can’t see slander. You can hear it, but you can’t see it. If you can see it, it’s libel.

Anything else that’s gone over your head that you want me to explain to you?

Well Tim, your family hasn’t outgrown bigotry. You have written libelous words as long as you have been commenting. Did you teach your kids to call people stupid? Did you teach your kids to correct other peoples spelling? Did you teach your kids to tell people to go die if they have different opinions? Or do you tell them not to be the way you are? So you are a white Calvinist! What’s your point, Tim. Your kids grew up with a dictator that taught them hate. You are an insecure bully that has been verbally abusing those you perceive are less than you. That is a long list. You can call me stupid every day and it only makes me smarter. You turned out just like the way you described your dad.

I hope your kids didn’t turn out like you, a bigot. It’s ingrained in you, that’s why you think it’s O.K. to tell people to go die, among other hateful words you use, and have been since you’ve been posting here, (two years at least). Orangemen are white Calvinist’s. Generations of bigotry right up to you and yours.

You have been venting your venom the entire time you have been posting (two years). I am stunned by all the lies you tell, while professing to be a truth teller. You use slurs to attack anyone that doesn’t agree with you. You have actually convinced yourself that it is the right thing to do, to tell people to eat a bullet, commit suicide, and call anyone with a different opinion, a racist, bigot and many other derogatory words (slurs), that is just falsehood (lies) to cover your own. You have been called out so many by others, only to keep posting more. hate.

I’m willing to give Tim Scott some leeway here. He hasn’t called an African American veteran a gang candidate on political hit mailers, which was the dog whistle used by our fearless suing machine mayor against Johnathan Ervin. Tim hasn’t stereotyped Asians and ‘The Gays’ as Rex likes to call them. Never have I read Tim support homophobic and anti Semites like Rex has.

Tim’s an angel compared to that piece of work.

            October 11, 2017 at 4:42 pm

I never said you used racial slurs, Tim. Now that’s just a big fat lie you decided to post. Making stuff up again, hoping it will stick to someone. Oh, and another thing I noticed, you only pounce on others spelling and sentence structure that post comments you don’t like. Otherwise, you say nothing if they think like you. Definitely a control issue, Tim.

          • Tim Scott says

            October 11, 2017 at 4:52 pm

LOL…Alexis, your claim that I tell “people who disagree with me” to eat a bullet is patently false, and everyone knows it. There have been dozens of people who have disagreed with me. Yet they know that I’ve never told them to eat a bullet. I’ve told YOU to eat a bullet, despite the fact that on a lot of issues we have agreed.

So, since it isn’t “people I disagree with,” what is it that sets you in such a small group? Well, maybe it’s the fact that you constantly call me names and lie about me. Or maybe it’s the fact that back when you first started calling me a “keyboard warrior” you acted like you wanted to meet in person to “sort out our differences” and then refused. Take responsibility for your behavior, and quit pretending that my despising you is a result of your opinions.

  10. Kay says

    October 6, 2017 at 8:06 am

Do other countries change their holidays because a few out of the many have a problem with the reason for the holiday? i think not! The greatest country in the world is losing more and more of its backbone every time something like this is done. Once history can be accessed only by computers, and something in our history is changed because it offends a particular group, that part of history will be wiped out with the press of a button. I’ve always felt that by knowing what really happened in our history helps keeps past atrocities from being repeated. Each of these states that makes up the United States states needs to quit cow towing to all of the whiners. Why don’t the people see that united we stand, divided we fall? We are becoming more and more divided. If we don’t become united, we are certain to fall.

    • Tim Scott says

      October 6, 2017 at 10:03 am

I see that “united we stand” bit, but if maintaining the US requires standing united with white nationalists I’d rather let it fall.

          October 6, 2017 at 10:10 am

Well, actually it would be best if they develop a human conscience and give up the white nationalism. But as a second choice staying in their little echo chamber is good.

          October 6, 2017 at 8:56 pm

I was just wondering why is there a negative connotation of “nationalist’? Are we conflating nationalist with supremist? Is that something from Breitbart?

I thought “nationalist” was just someone that loves their country. Why is it bad to love one’s country? What if you were a black nationalist, like Sheriff Clarke of Milwaukee? Would that be bad?

Seconded! If the county does not want to celebrate Columbus, then they don’t need to. It can be just another workday for our county employees. Certainly the county supervisors don’t want to “celebrate” the pain of suffering of so many people.

  13. Human says

    October 5, 2017 at 9:15 am

Humanity on a whole has a sordid history of mistreatment and atrocities against fellow human beings. It is en vogue to highlight Columbus and the Europeans, but a stdy of world history will unveil an unsightly portrait of behaviour. Humanity has not loved one another as it should.

  14. ColumbusDaySucks! says

    October 5, 2017 at 9:07 am

Good and about freaking time, why do we keep ignoring the fact that the real savages and greedy #$@$% were the Europeans that “found” land that was never lost to begin with? We should demand that history in this country is re-written to show the atrocities committed in the name of hate and greed. Other countries show students their history with accuracy, the good and the bad, we sugar coat everything and it’s ridiculous.

Being Native American myself, you cannot erase the past by changing names, removing statues, not teach history to our children, etc. By trying to erase the truth of what happened, we are dooming ourselves to repeat the past as we see happening right now with the violence caused by the left. Not proud of the past of what happened to my people and others, but it is the past and we as humans have the ability to move forward and be peaceful and accepting of one another despite our difference, i.e. beliefs and backgrounds. May God Bless you all.

I went to the Yucatan Penninsula and Quintana Roo province of Mexico last year for an expedition at Tulum and other Mayan holy sites. While there, our tour guide (a Princeton-educated Mayan himself) stated that the Mayans ultimately created their own fate. They had an advanced mathematics and astronomy system that was very intricate and rivaled those of other known civilizations at the time. Where they went wrong was when the lower class Mayans in society grew jealous of the educated class of Mayans. When this happened, they toppled the entire Mayan civilization and destroyed the culture, thereby, making it easier for the Spanish to eventually come in and conquer them.

In essence, the destruction of Mayan culture was in large part their own fault and nobody else’s.

That depends on who’s paranoid fantasies you inhabit. Usually this particular paranoid fantasy is used to support the “what we really need is debtor’s prisons like our European ancestors used” because THAT is what really made our civilization great.

Why don’t we have holidays that celberate the screw ups of every races past. Remind them of who their forefathers use to be. How they were robbers, rapists, fraudulent. This b.s. was voted in by indigenous morons that need a reason to look down on certain people that have squat to do with the past… a 400+ year old past. Hmm, I wonder how groups like black lives matter, etc would handle the idea of voting in a memorial day that reminds them of the evil of there prior generations. Nowadays everyone is a victim. It’s pathetic.

So you are saying that Europeans saved the Americas from the natives?

        • Independs says

          October 6, 2017 at 7:34 pm

No, not at all. I think you misunderstood. Let me be clear. The Conquistadors were human scum and the Europeans raped, plundered and enslaved an isolated, prosperous, relatively peaceful “New World”. Natives probably wished Europeans stayed in the “Old World’.

Their legacy of corruption, piss-poor government and exploitation/subjugation of the natives still bites us in Latin America (and now in Mexifornia) to this day. Yeah, yeah, racist, racist, racist…….Truth hurts?

Analysis: Guns and horses ruled. They won with military technology. The stronger will bully the weaker. It’s unfortunate and unfair, but evolution and human nature from the beginning.

Lesson learned: Have better technology. Rebuild our military !!!!!!!!

          Columbus sucked! Antifa sucks now.
