Palmdale man shot by security guard at Sylmar grocery store

by The AV Times Staff • October 27, 2016

SYLMAR – Authorities Thursday identified a man who was fatally shot by a security guard at a Sylmar grocery store after allegedly threatening employees with a shard of glass.

The shooting was reported about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the 13700 block of Foothill Boulevard, said Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.

Joshua Kistler, 32, of Palmdale died at the scene.

“He came in angry, ready to hurt people,” Im said of the suspect.

The guard was questioned, but was not arrested, according to the LAPD.

Witnesses told police the guard was defending himself and the store’s employees.

This will occur more often as soon as propositions 57 and 62 pass. Security is an overhead expense most businesses and people do not want to pay for but it is like insurance of any type. It is only good when you need it and HAVE to use it. You can go cheap and get what you pay for. Yes, private security personnel do not have police type protection nor their responsibly. Private security primary duty is NOT public safety unless they are employed for that purpose. They are paid to protect their client’s assets, whatever that is.

The last thing an armed security guard wants to encounter is a crazy/high person with a shard of glass threatening people, because as soon as he pulls that trigger he has everything to lose, his job which provides for his family and his freedom. He does not have the same protections a police officer has when he pulls his weapon. In this situation it appears he was in the right, and I hope he is cleared and continues his job.

I don’t care where you from this young man died and it probably could have been prevented the security officers just shoot to kill they don’t have no training like police officers they should use non-lethal weapons before shooting someone and killing them in a grocery store I mean come on it only takes a couple hour training course to become a security guard and a couple more hours to get your gun license in total they probably only have a week of training and this is what happens when you give a scared person a gun

you obviously dont understand the that it only takes a couple of seconds for that shard of glass to kill someone! Shoot him in the leg and he can still chuck that glass.Typical asshole trying to make the bad guy the victim

And you obviously sir have no experience in the private security field advanced officers like the one that fired on this individual was not only a security guard at a former member of our United States military as many of us in in the security field..and FYI it takes more than a couple of hours to get your permits don’t get it twisted

so crazy people with shards of glass should be allowed to run around threatening people.. i bet if some crazy person stabbed you with a shard of glass while you were shopping in the frozen foods section your first thought would be “why isnt security here to protect me??”

This AV scum deserves what he got. I’m glad no one else was hurt or seriously injured except for the security guard who has to live with this for the rest of his life. Keep AV trash in the desert where it belongs!

Sylmar….the San Fernando Valley’s anal orifice if it ever had one!

Nothing but trailer parks, dirty apartment complexes and flophouses for p0rn0 movie filming!

Be careful where you step in Sylmar, you just might slip on a used c0nd0m and end up at Olive View.

And, where does Sean S. live now, Hidden Hills or some other gated community?

He seems to be very knowledgeable about Sylmar, and adult film making.

Not really William. Most of that Industry has relocated to Florida and that film industry has never been pro condom so the chances of slipping on one as a result of a production is pretty slim lol. Besides, Sylmar was never a hotspot for those films, it was further west in good old Chatsworth and Reseda. I also don’t think Hidden Hills is a valid residence for him, I’m wagering more like Sunset Ridge.

If all you know is what you read in the paper maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself. There is always information that you don’t know. This was someone’s friend. Someone’s son. Have some respect for those who just lost there loved one. Whether he was mentally ill or not. I hope you never have anyone close to you suffer from anything that could cause such a tragedy.

Josh was a good friend of mine and NOT scum. You didn’t know him so how dare you say that. He was a military veteran and good person who had some problems. Please think in the future before you start calling people nasty names especially if you DON’T know them!!!
