LANCASTER – A 57-year-old woman died and a 65-year-old man sustained major injuries early Tuesday morning in a crash on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, authorities said.

The fatal collision occurred around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, on southbound SR-14, just south of Avenue M in the Palmdale area, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

“The driver of a 2004 Jeep Rubicon, for unknown reasons, was stopped, partially blocking the No. 3 lane and right shoulder… The driver of a 2014 Toyota Tacoma was traveling southbound in the No. 3 lane and was unable to avoid the Jeep,” the CHP report states.

“As a result, the Toyota collided with the Jeep, causing both occupants of the Jeep to be ejected,” the CHP report states.

Paul John Eischeid, 65, of Llano sustained major injuries and was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital. The second occupant, a 57-year-old woman from Llano, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP report. Her name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.

The Toyota Tacoma’s driver, 22-year-old Davion Patrick Tambi of Lancaster, was treated and released at the scene, the CHP report states.

A SigAlert was issued closing all southbound lanes due to the traffic collision. All lanes reopened just after 7:30 a.m., the CHP reported.

UPDATED 9.21.16: The deceased has been identified as Donna Carpenter, 57, of Llano, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

I’d like to add that I once had a Jeep quit on me on the freeway. It was terrifying. Another time it went out of control and that was terrifying as well. Perhaps their Jeep did the same. Luckily I was on the right side of the fwy both times and could pull over quickly.

Thank you all for condolences. After finding out facts and reading police reports, I am not sorry for this young man at all. He has lied about the lights he has lied about his phone and he has taken our mother and her grandkids away from us and her. She never met her new granddaughter Sarah Elaine. Sarah was named after my mother. I’ve reached out to the family to no avail. I’ve seen that he’s celebrating a proposal 7 days after killing 2 people. So for anyone with an opinion please keep it to yourself. My sister and I have not recovered from this loss. Our heart hearts. I’m sure Paul’s family feels the same

Paul is my friend of 30+ yrs. We went to visit him in the hospital yesterday. He hasn’t regained consciousness. Major head trauma. Please pray for his recovery. And for the family who lost their loved one. No one will ever know what really happened as far as the car being partially in the slow lane.

This is very sad news for sll6the drivers and thr families involved. My prayers go out to them all. The 14 Fwy has definitely turned into some sort of racetrack. There are tines, that i get passed and while driving 10 miles, over the speed limit because I’m trying to keep up. I also see people constantly not switch lanes when there is a stopped car on the shoulders. It’s crazy. Again my prayers to all involved.

Thank you for this post…. my brother was the Toyota driver. Amazing kid!! Very safe driver and the biggest heart you could ever imagine. Who knows why the lights were out on the Jeep… We may never know. But I pray for the families who lost a loved one and to the other man involved. I pray he makes it through! All we can do is pray!

This is ,tragic so sorry for the losses, and both sides have valid points. The pictures clearly show the lights on the Jeep were on.

Only the front lights were on. They are examining the vehicle to see why they weren’t on

Most Likely the guy in the Tacoma was unable to avoid the vehicle because of excessive speed!

It’s a freeway. Obviously they were going fast.

        September 20, 2016 at 6:23 pm

Yup, I’ll just pass this slow traffic that is only doing 5-10 MPH over the speed limit on the right….

          September 20, 2016 at 7:35 pm

You must be kinda dense. Have you been on the freeway at that time of the morning? I am every day. Most people aren’t going very fast and there certainly isn’t enough people on the road to require passing on the right (which is a perfectly legitimate strategy when idiots like you don’t move over for faster traffic but that’s a topic for a different time)

Lets not forget to mention the 14 freeway in some areas are poorly lit.

Tweek is a moron ignore him.

            September 24, 2016 at 9:15 am

Oh thanks Tweek. The driver of the Toyota was my blood cousin. We are very thankful he is ok. Though a very tragic accident, our family is praying for the family of the injured and deceased. But please don’t make idiotic comments about a situation you weren’t here to experience. You let me know what you would do on the 14 freeway minding your own business and a out of nowhere a car is stopped in front of you and you only could see it from maybe 20 feet away going 65 70 mph before impact. Keep UNNECESSARY IGNORANT to yourselves. Thanks.

You know what happens when you assume??

    • Just Saying says

      September 20, 2016 at 6:32 pm

Most likely the on site law enforcement had plenty of time to measure the length of the skid marks while the driver was being attended to. Too long, and he goes to jail. About the right length for the proper speed, and he gets released.

What is the basis of your conclusion? All Tacomas speed? You were next to him also speeding? Or is it “Sofia said”, so it must be true.

On my toe truck driver in this accident happened because people don’t obey the law, California law say that you had to slow down or move to the next lane people don’t do it ,I know people trying to go toward trying to go home with their families but I have a family too and I always trying to get home if you guys can help post when you see a flashes or work people on the side of the road moving or slow down

    • Kebert Xela says

Lets just suppose the 14 is poorly lit and the jeep did not have any lights on at all. Maybe they lost power, Alternator dies so will the battery and then the vehicle and they had just enough power to make it almost on the shoulder. People should carry road flares or portable road triangles.
