LANCASTER – Members of The Satanic Temple of Los Angeles were in Lancaster Monday afternoon to perform an introductory ritual and to present city officials with the “The Seven Tenets,” which reflect the core beliefs of The Satanic Temple.
About three dozen Satanists arrived around 3:30 p.m. to Lancaster City Hall. But the group was confronted outside by more than 100 local Christians who waved signs, quoted scriptures over a bullhorn, sang hymns and called on the Satanists to “repent.”
“We aren’t going to allow Satan to take control of our city and that’s why we’re here,” said Associate Pastor Joe Avalos of Victory Outreach.”
The Satanists responded to the Christian protest with chants of “Hail Satan!”
The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, according to the organization’s website.
Former U.S. Marine Sergeant Steve Hill is The Satanic Temple’s first political candidate who has openly acknowledged affiliation. The Antelope Valley resident is running as a Democrat for the California State Senate District 21.
