LANCASTER – A man with a prior DUI conviction was sentenced Thursday to 15 years to life behind bars for driving drunk, crashing his pickup truck into a Lancaster home and killing a 71-year-old woman in her bed.
Aaron Daniel Benson, 26, was convicted Dec. 23 of charges stemming from the March 29, 2015, crash that killed Patricia Ann Holmes, who was alone in her house in the 1000 block of West Avenue J-12.
The elderly woman was found in her bed underneath Benson’s 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said Benson crashed the truck into several parked cars on both sides of the street as he moved westbound on Avenue J-12 before slamming into the home.
Benson’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit at the time of the crash.
He was convicted of one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense and driving with a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense.
Benson was previously convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2011, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
