Man killed in two-vehicle crash ID’d

by City News Service • September 21, 2015

fatal crashLANCASTER – The coroner’s office has released the name of a driver killed Saturday in a two-vehicle crash near Lancaster.

Seventy-nine-year-old Calixto Navarez of Rosamond died at the scene after he drove his 2001 Ford Taurus through a stop sign and collided with a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened around 10:47 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at 70th Street West and Avenue D, the CHP said.

Navarez was southbound on 70th Street West and drove directly into the path of the pickup truck driven by 28-year-old Tylor Dishman of Lancaster, who was westbound on Avenue D, according to the CHP.

Dishman’s injuries were minor and he was treated at the scene and released.

Navarez’s passenger — 66-year-old Olga Navarez of Rosamond — suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital for treatment, the CHP said.

The incident remains under investigation.

    3 thoughts –
1st and foremost – Prayers to all involved and affected by this
2nd – At some point, all elderly drivers need to be re-tested behind-the-wheel.
And last – why can’t all desert intersections have the solar-powered blinking stop signs like those being installed around local schools. Seems like the benefits would out-weigh the costs in the long run…

DiMar, this stop does have blinking red LED I believe, many of them on SR-138 do now. Not like the ones you see near schools though.

There has been a white Taurus style vehicle that has previously blown through stop signs, not sure if they are the same. There are many vehicles that regularly caught off cars or just straight out blow through stops.

I do agree that elderly drivers need to be tested regularly, however the AARP has fought that for years.

Blowing through a stop sign has nothing to do with age. I watched a lady and her four children blow one on 30th st east and Ave H in 1999. She was undocumented and no license. She and three of her four children died when they collided with a pickup truck. The driver of the truck died also.
There were a couple of teenagers killed on this same highway when their Prius ran a stop sign on 138 and 60th west, not far from this accident. https://theavtimes.com/2014/07/01/2-teens-killed-in-highway-138-crash/
These accidents have everything to do with people disregarding the stop signs as a way of life. Race, age, type vehicle, none of these have anything to do with the causes of these accidents. A study by the University of Michigan found drivers 75+ years old have the same rate of accidents as people 20 years old. So the statistics undermine whatever you’re using as a basis for your opinion.

Agree, it is a way of life. I have talked to young adults in their 20s that gained a license from DMV and yet they say you do not have to stop at a stop sign if you think there is enough clearance. Or you do not see anyone coming. That would be most of them as they stare at their phones in their laps (little secret kids, teachers know what you are looking at in your lap and so the CHP, hold it up so you can see the road!)

Because if you put them far enough out in the desert you are supplying the black market for solar powered blinking red LEDs, and probably getting the stop signs removed or defaced to the point of uselessness in the process. Putting them near schools means putting them where civilization can keep an eye on them.
