LOS ANGELES – A Palmdale man is one of two suspects charged with murdering a 25-year-old man in Leimert Park last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Dondre Williams of Palmdale and Tyree Davion Woods of Los Angeles, both 21, are charged with capital murder in connection with the July 20 shooting death of Derron Jamaire Jones.
The murder charge includes a special circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery, which could make them eligible for the death penalty. The complaint also alleges Woods personally used a handgun.
Prosecutors will later decide whether to seek death.
Prosecutors allege the pair were following a car driven by Derron Jones on July 20. As Jones, who had a woman as a passenger, attempted to make a U-turn, Woods allegedly cut off Jones’ car, stepped out of his own vehicle and opened fire.
Jones was struck by bullets in his arms and chest and his 2012 Cadillac sedan ultimately crashed into several other vehicles in the 4100 block of West 41st Street, according to police, who said they believed the shooting was gang- related.
Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. His female passenger was uninjured, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Williams and Woods were arrested Aug. 20 after a police pursuit, prosecutors said. They are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, Aug. 26, in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.
Both are being held without bail.
