PALMDALE – A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a pickup truck Thursday afternoon in a driveway in Palmdale, authorities said.
The incident happened around 5:35 p.m. Thursday, June 25, on Avenue R-8, east of 30th Street East.
Martin Rios, 52, of Palmdale was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 eastbound into a private driveway on Avenue R-8, according to Detective Brent Bunch of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.
“[The] preliminary investigation indicates that the child walked out in front of the vehicle,” Bunch said.
The toddler was struck by the truck and pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics.
“Our preliminary investigation indicates neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in this collision,” Bunch said.
Avenue R-8 was closed to routine traffic between 30th Street East and Lemonwood until approximately 9 p.m. to allow for the investigation.
The child’s name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.
UPDATED 6.26.15: The toddler has been identified as Miguel Martinez of Palmdale, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. The child was born in August 2013, which means he was just under 2 years old.
