LANCASTER – A juvenile has been arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly woman at her Lancaster home Thursday, homicide detectives announced Friday morning.
The victim, a female in her 80s, was found dead with apparent stab wounds around 7:10 p.m. Thursday, June 18, in the 44600 block of Stillwater Drive, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
“Deputies from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station responded to the location regarding a call of an ‘open window’ at the residence. Upon arrival, deputies entered the home and found the woman unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be cut wounds about her upper torso,” the sheriff’s news release states.
Paramedics responded and pronounced the woman dead at the location.
“During their investigation, detectives were told by witnesses in the neighborhood that a person matching the description of the suspect was possibly hiding in the bushes,” sheriff’s officials said in the news release.
Lancaster patrol deputies responded to the area and detained a juvenile who was hiding in the bushes, and the juvenile was positively identified by the witnesses, according to homicide detectives.
“Detectives conducted an interview of the juvenile. He was arrested for murder and [is] currently being held with no bail,” the sheriff’s news release states.
The juvenile was booked at Lancaster Sheriff’s Station and transported to Sylmar Juvenile Hall for housing.
The investigation is still ongoing, and there is no additional information at this time, homicide detectives said Friday morning.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
UPDATE: The suspect is a 14-year-old boy, according to a report by City News Service.
UPDATE: The victim has been identified at 86-year-old Annie Bell of Lancaster, according to coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

30yr Citizen says
Well I suggest you sleep next to your pistol or shotgun like every American family should these days. I remember not even needing to lock our doors at night, and now look at this dump. Rest in peace miss Annie and best wishes to your family.
Tim Scott says
I see no particular need to lock my doors at night. I do, out of habit, but for it to matter someone would have to try to turn the knob, and no one ever does.
Crime rates in the Antelope Valley have not changed much in my time here, which vastly exceeds thirty years. You are free to peddle your fears, but people should be aware that they are not based on anything real. A good woman lost her life, and that is tragic…but it is far more practical to make your plans based on the half a million AV residents who did NOT lose their life that night.
AV_Rick says
Tim;
How can you be for certain that nobody has ever turned the doorknob at your domicile? Do you sit up all night with your eyes trained and locked on the doorknobs until the sun emerges again ? – I don’t peddle fears or unsubstantiated ‘what if’s’ – I base my opinion around factual events. Such as the fact that a 14 year old broke into an 86 year old woman’s house and took her life. In over 30+ years if you’ve failed to see a change in the crime rate than I can see why you also would seriously make statements about people’s fears not being based on anything real. It would be clear to me that either you’ve lived under a rock since the early 1980’s or you clearly have some sort of memory and retention issue. Yes a good woman did lose her life, but in your haste to portray yourself as the impossible victim you overlooked the fact that this didn’t happen at night – This happened in broad daylight. Do you wait until dark to lock them ‘pointless’ doorknobs on your house? When one makes plans they should always plan for the unexpected. Just in case.
Tim Scott says
Because the sound of a rattling doorknob in the night and my dogs would go flatly ape****, so I do actually know if such things happen…and they don’t. As you point out, the kid went in in broad daylight apparently THROUGH A WINDOW, so the whole “lock your doors” thing really doesn’t seem to apply.
As to the crime RATE, I suspect you are making the very common mistake of ignoring the word RATE.
Are there twenty times as many crimes in a month in the AV than there were when I was a kid…why, yes, there are.
Do we get a heinous murder every couple weeks instead of once a year? Why yes, we do.
Are there twenty times as many criminals, and twenty times as many victims? Why yes, there are.
But the crime RATE, measured in annual crimes per hundred thousand residents hasn’t changed much at all, because there are in fact twenty times as many residents also.
You should “plan for the unexpected,” but you should factor in the realistic probabilities. Otherwise you never leave your house because, y’know, lightning DOES strike.
AV_Rick says
I never said lock your doors; I simply wanted to know what stealth powers you possessed that enables you to keep tabs on your doorknobs 24 hours a day.
As for crime ‘rate’ – Yeah, the system of measurement contradicts yada upward trend in violent crimes, so essentially there has been an increase in crime, tons of heinous murders, way more violent crime than when I was a kid, technically speaking the ‘rate’ hasn’t increased yadda because it correlates with the population increase. Therefore it’s to be expected – Yadda.
– I figured out your weapon of choice: You’d bore a criminal to death before they had a chance to get you first; assuming they made it past your barking dogs, doorknobs that are only locked out of habit and whatever other crafty devices you’re working with …
With all your amazing luck and experience + hatred for law enforcement and creative views on statistics instead of calling 911 I guess maybe people should …
… “Better Call Tim” instead …
Don’t glance at your old rotary phone Tim, I was just joking. Nobody is really going to call you. Well, at least not for advice or help.
You’re right about lightening though; remember too that it sometimes strikes the same place twice.
Tim Scott says
LOL…I love how when confronted by simple facts you find them boring! It explains so much about the uninformed opinions you post.
The crime RATE is what determines the probability you will be a crime victim, so call it “yadda yadda yadda” if you want, but your entire fear mongering premise is shot here. I don’t need a “weapon of choice” or anyone to call, because the chances that anything is going to happen to me in particular tonight among the HALF A MILLION people in this valley are pretty much a million to one.
So you go on fantasizing about cops heroically coming to your rescue or cuddle up with your loaded gun or whatever floats ya. I’ll just go on living my fairly simple happy life.
Lady Liberty says
I have lived here since 1978 and yes the crime has increased with the population increase. In 1978 it was home owners who loved it and wanted to be here. Now it is renters who don’t like it and are forced to be here.
Tim Scott says
Crime increasing with the population has no effect on crime RATE, which is a direct measure of the risk you actually face. In 1978 you faced about the same risk of crime you face today.
Heck, I lived here then and I was a teen-ager so I know there was risk of crime. I just couldn’t even begin to get around to everyone. There are a lot more criminals now, but they still can’t even begin to get around to everyone because there is a lot more everyone to get to.
Greg says
Tazered doorknobs, issue solved.

AV Rick –Tim Scott is the EX Con – Criminal defender he swears nothing has changed in the AV i think he is a lil off blind or just plays dumb.
Tim Scott says
Most people who follow me around as avidly as you do are in my fan club, but I don’t recognize you for some reason…
Sandra says
What an idiot. The only reason you could be so stupid is because it was not anyone you know. That woman was a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a wife and a friend. Show compassion, fellow feeling. That’s why people can commit such horrible crimes. People become uncaring about other people. Wake up. Develop compassion. And keep ignorant comments to your self.
Susan Pillar says
So sorry to hear about Miss Annie, may she rest in peace.
It is so sad to hear that a fourteen year old child would commit such a horrible crime. What kind of parents does he have and what has he been taught. His life is just beginning and he has already ruined it. What a shame.
Cali Palmdale says
Really if this kid well I don’t consider him a kid this Murdered did it let lets take him out death penalty but he shouldn’t sit for ever in jail free food free life tax payers money not on my dime. He will never change hi is a lost case I wonder where his parents where getting high. AND PEOPLE THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ANY OF YOU HERE IN THE AV we need to send a strong message to all the scum trash in this valley you commit a crime you pay with life or max sentence. And the reason why LASD takes long on calls now is because they are making sure they don’t confront any suspects in the act and have to shoot them then all hell breaks lose all the criminal defenders come out and protest a killers killing.
michael says
We do need to gather together and ask our mayors….city elects what are they going to do now that our once save..clean..good place to raise our kids…is turning into a scum pond. Disrespect for others…no sense of pride …trashing the community…we never had tagging before 2004. This is terrible…horiffic we should be up in arms! A sweet 88 yr old woman was killed in her own home where she should have been safe! She must have been so scared and suffered pain she never should have….what are we the community going to do? This will involve everyone from teachers…neighbors. ..friends..all of us to be aware and call attention to people whom seem aggresive..dangerous…we need the old school town meetings called. Does anyone go to city counsel meetings? A concert we will go to….what about this town and it’s safety?
AV says
I would like for that to happen and we all AV residents would get together and come up with a solution to try and clean up the city and get rid of all the thugs trash rapist all if they people where able to clean up areas like South Central Compton Watts its way better than what it used to be years ago why cant we do the same and make this a peaceful family oriented city again.
soapbox journal says
I am sorry to see this lady murdered, it could have been any of us. And as for South Central, Compton and Watts cleaning up their crime, they sent the trash here, did not solve anything just dumped it on us. So now where do we dump the trash again?
Autumn says
Michael said, “we never had tagging before 2004.” I was born here and lived in AV all my life. I know I have seen tagging here since the late 80’s when people from L.A. and other areas of so cal started moving here in the housing boom. I remember seeing tagging in 1989 and the 90’s when I was a kid. I remember seeing TDK all over walls and dumpsters. Just sayin’.
Tim Scott says
Don’t try to confuse them with facts Autumn, their minds are made up.
question of the day says
Just wondering how long was the lag time between Annie calling 9-11 and they arriving to finding her dead… if it turns out they didn’t respond right-away (which is TYPICAL for the sorry LASO), they could of stopped this. Will someone ask the LASO that question??? Inquiring minds DEMAND to know….
Joe says
It seems that only your mind has dipped low enough to ask this question. The article says the Sheriffs dept. responded to an open window call not a 911 call from ms. Annie.
So Please let her rest in peace, instead of using her death as a way of bashing the Sheriffs dept.
Oh before you assume no I am not or have been a sheriff employee.
Thankful Annie was surrounded by good neighbors who kept an eye on the neighbors. Need more neighborhoods to come together!
ERIK says
Joe- I agree with you 100%. The difference between your comment and the others in this thread is that you offer a positive and simple solution….neighborhoods looking after one another.
There are people like “Miss Annie” in all of our neighborhoods. We need to make sure and look after them. A lot of them are alone and lonesome. Friendship means the world to them.
I would have hated to respond to a call like that. I am sure the deputies over there that night were absolutely horrified and disgusted with that scene. Such depravity in the actions of that young man are hard to fathom.
seer says
neighborhoods looking after one another sounds great not knocking it. one reason neighbors can’t get along is the kids. I don’t think I have to go in great lengths to explain. I would like to get along with neighbors but why are security camera needed? there are pro’s and con’s.
Tim Scott says
If you want your house looked after then the neighborhood kids are the ones you need to make friends with. The adults three doors down might see something going on if they happen to drive by at the right moment, but it is the kids who are out and about all the time.

**********************************
Tim – Make friends with the neighborhood kids…? That suggestion would sound unsavory coming from any grown man, however seeing it in a post from you, so casually and matter of fact like just added a new level of seediness to it. I hope you live on a street where most people’s kids are grown and out of the house.
Tim Scott says
LOL…sure Rick…kids are just sex objects to you I guess. Must be rough for you to get along in the world.
Ever heard of Big Brothers? Mentoring programs?
Instead of just trying to be a jerk maybe you should try thinking about what is being said. You’ll not wind up looking as foolish.

**************************************
Tim;
I am well aware of such mentoring programs and based upon your posts I somehow doubt you’d come close to qualifying as a mentor to any kid. You’re just out to troll – Nothing constructive coming from your head; more of the same ramblings revolving around your hatred of law enforcement, your tamper proof doorknobs and a shady idea that befriending neighborhood children or recruiting them as friends/personal watchdogs is a good deterrent to becoming a victim of crime, although you won’t ever be a victim because of the statistics and crime rate clearly show you’re safe. Heed your own advice and think about what is being said. So far you’ve stated that the AV has nothing but LAPD Rampart scandal rejects working as Sheriff’s up here and that it’s best to befriend kids to keep an eye on your property since adults don’t pay attention. You’re a different cat alright. Carry on.
Tim Scott says
Guess what Rick, you are wrong again. Not believing in the “cops are good” fantasy is not a disqualifier for much of anything. In fact, after Rampart, and Ferguson, and everything in between, I actually find that there is a majority of agreement with me on the subject. The citizens just haven’t figured out quite how to deal with our armed and badged thug problem, because of the symbiosis between politicians like Rex and their pet thugs.
Meanwhile, just like all your other paranoid delusions, the “any adult that can hold a conversation with a kid must be a pedophile” assumption holds no water at all. For every sex offender a kid might run into there are literally THOUSANDS of people who aren’t. If you have any kids I certainly hope you get over that, because I’d hate to see your poor little ruggers grow up without having any opportunity to see what an adult is other than your sorry state of paranoia.
You are a barrel of laughs, but even the best punching bags get worn out so you should probably stop embarrassing yourself here and get out on the streets where a badge and gun can strike fear in those who would otherwise laugh at you, because civil conversation is clearly not your thing. I hear the LACSD is hiring.
Confused says
Just as a reference point, please don’t befriend my children.
Tim Scott says
Confused…have you branded them on the forehead or something? Certainly wouldn’t want them to get exposed to any conflicting viewpoints other than your own dinosaur racism.
Confused says
No I just prefer not to have strange adults talking to my kids. Oddly I tell them not to talk to strangers. I’m not sure where the dino racism comes from. I’m a minority but whatever.
Tim Scott says
You may not be the same “confused” as was commenting elsewhere. My apologies for the confusion.
Most kids in my neighborhood have been coming to my door, with their parents, for years every time they were selling candy bars or coupon books or whatever fundraiser of the moment they were involved in. And at halloween, when I sit out near the street and talk to their parents rather than just opening and closing the door. They’ve seen or been with their parents when they got advice, or tools, or help, or all three, because I’m a helpful guy who retired from the building trades. I don’t think many people around here think of me in particular when they say, or hear, “don’t talk to strangers”.
Robert Brady says
Without knowing the facts, and not reading anything stating it was the victim that called in, you can’t blame the LAS”D” for this.
Annoyed says
A neighbor called this in. Are you seriously trying to pin a teenager brutally murdering an elderly woman on the police? Get a clue!!
Nancy P says
I understand your comment/question. I wondered myself, how long the response time was between the call for service and the cops showing up. It usually took hours to get a patrol car to roll through the neighborhood. I lived there for 7 years and saw that for myself.
I am glad they did show up and check the house out. This crime could have gone undiscovered for awhile. Thank you to the neighbor who was looking out for things being unusual, and calling it in.
Friends, neighbors and family will miss Miss Annie.
Joe Citizen says
I wish I was a sheep like you. Must be nice to sit behind a computer and speak of something you know absolutely nothing about. Please tell me what “you” have done to better this town??
Tim Scott says
For your request to have any credibility it would need to give some indication that you have done anything other than sit behind a computer speaking of things you know nothing about yourself. Name calling doesn’t really cut it.
Joe says
Was I the one that said it was police officers fault for a woman dying? No wonder Lancaster is the busiest station in LA County, and no officers want to work here. Thanks again sheep for your comment, still waiting to see what you have done for this community besides bravely type behind your computer…. Still waiting…..
Tim Scott says
It is truly hilarious how you pretend to be on a pedestal while demonstrating nothing. You can namecall with…well, the average of them I guess, since the best wouldn’t have reused “sheep”…but before you ask what anyone else does don’t you think you yourself should demonstrate something other than “typing bravely behind your computer”?
As to why no deputies want to work here…I could not care less. The AV station is the equivalent of being “busted out to BFE” so we have ALWAYS been stuck with the dregs of the LACSD. When the LAPD got reformed after the riots the LACSD welcomed the thugs fleeing the axe with open arms, and now most of the scum from Rampart are our problem.
But this actually has nothing to do with “the police officers fault for a woman dying”, I just took exception to you playing keyboard thug and calling Joe Citizen names.
AV_Rick says
Question of the day …
After reading your statement I don’t believe your mind is capable of inquiring, let alone demanding to know anything; your attitude and unwarranted hostility while playing the self appointed roll of the local Lancaster Kojak is pathetic. At no point in the article does it state or even elude that the victim herself called 911 nor was the ‘typical’ lag in response from the ‘sorry’ LASO the culprit in this homicide.
Here’s a question that someone with a true inquiring mind would and should ask and demand: Where in the hell where this 14 year old punks parents and/or guardians while he was in the process of breaking into an elderly woman’s house..? Where where they and what where they doing as a parental unit when he made the decision to go from petty burglar to homicide suspect…?
Something tells me that this 14 year old is probably no stranger to trouble and probably has a history of clashing with authority figures and not following the rules. I’m sure his teachers, neighbors and anyone that knew him aren’t surprised by this latest addition to his resume. If you don’t mind, I’ll do some Kojak style assumptions of my own here; based upon what I have read in the articles and comments I would venture that the 14 year old probably lives close to the victim and this wasn’t his first break in. In fact I’m willing to bet he resides in a pad that has probably been a source of problems for it’s neighbors. Parental unit and significant other (highly probable that it’s not both the 14 year old’s biological mom/dad) are probably pretty detached and uninterested with the burden of raising any kids, yet they are probably pretty vocal over the very idea that this could of possibly been committed by their perfect baby. That’s probably the extent of their ‘parenting’ …
Yet you and your bullion cube sized logic overlooks that aspect and goes right for a familiar scapegoat, the old ‘let’s blame the police’ for this one. Why not, it’s their jobs to raise everyone else’s kids, correct? It’s the responsibility of everyone BUT the parents to ensure that little Billy doesn’t behave badly. If only the cops would of got there sooner, they could of slapped little Billy on the wrist and prevented him from committing homicide. Maybe his teacher or a social worker could of instilled the value of human life and taught him that it is wrong to burglarize and take someone’s life. Hell, why stop there? Why don’t you just blame the poor 86 year old victim too; if she would of had more secure windows and lived in a house void of any potential items to steal, there would of been no appeal to break inside and the kid wouldn’t of chose her home and well by gosh, this wouldn’t of happened, right?
Perhaps if maybe this scumbag’s parents knew or cared what he was up to and were actually being parents, the life of an 86 year old woman wouldn’t of ended on such a tragic note. This crime and the circumstances surrounding it are atrocious by themselves, but your comment just added another layer of disgust to it.
However, I have an answer to your original question that your inquiring mind demanded to know: If the victim herself had called 911 and the cops had rushed right over and caught this kid red handed in the process of breaking into this woman’s house and the media reported it, you and those who share your mentality would be on here posting the same negative comments, only this time you would be accusing the police of profiling and stereotyping and engaging in a pattern of oppression against the citizens of the AV – He would of just been some 14 year old who may or may not of been breaking into a house and the police were wrong to assume he was going to.
Meanwhile, back in reality, he did break in and take the life of an innocent woman. A woman who lived 86 years only to have her life snuffed out by some 14 year old monster for whatever contents he could stuff in his pockets or backpack. It’s stuff like this that makes the idea of retroactive birth control such an appealing idea and worthy of study and funding.
I’m done with people like you who blame everyone and everything else as a means to exonerate those truly responsible and at fault whenever something like this happens. My condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Bell – I’m terribly sorry and saddened by this tragic act and hope that justice ensures that those responsible for her tragic death will never see the light of day again.

I recall seeing Annie in the library at the senior center. All of us who were at the senior center on Friday were horrified (and frightened). Angela, the head of the center, wisely got a counselor from the county to be available for all of us. I hope the Lancaster sheriff’s station will have Sgt. Dawson of community relations come and address the center and answer questions. By the way, the county is going to work on improving the center at its present location. I favor using the grounds of AV Hospital and starting fresh by building a secure senior center there with parking around the building and multiple entrances converging into a senior lobby.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of this horrible crime to such a lovely lady. We had many fun days at the Senior Center together with our other friend Naomi Moraga. Annie, you will be missed very much. Rest in Peace Dear friend.

I am in absolute total shock, just completely heart broken over this horrible news, I have enjoyed many wonderful meals with Ms. Annie Bell at the Lancaster Senior Center. My last conversation with her was how much she loved her family and how good her son was to her. I would compliment her nice attire and she said that her son buys all of her cloths. This is so sad.

We live in this neighborhood and this crime is too close for comfort. Really scary that a juvenile could do this to anybody let alone an elderly lady.
Yvette says
I lived across the street from this kind woman for 15 years. I am still in shock, I can’t believe she is gone. This was a senseless killing… Our neighborhood has not seen this type of violence.. I don’t understand how a 14 year old could have committed such a heinous crime. She will be missed..

what the hell are parents teaching their children now a days? no remorse? wow. this young man should be held accountable as an adult.
Unfortunate says
Unfortunately, the problem is that they are not being taught at all. They are not shown how to be productive, kind, respectful citizens. To work hard for what they want so they may appreciate it more. Not enough discipline, and they don’t have to be beat to get them to learn. I was punished as a child and only once was it ever by hand and in my opinion I’m a damn good citizen. Most parents are either working their asses off to survive and the children are cared for by someone else or are caring for themselves or they have parents who just dgaf either way. Very sad situation…

He didnt have parents hes been in foster care since he was a baby I know this kid he’s actually a good child i just cany believe he would do something like this
Confused says
He’s not a good kid. He may have seemed capable of being good, but I bet this is not his first time getting into trouble. Your definition and my definition of good is probably not the same.
Tim Scott says
Since based on your other comments your definition of “good” clearly includes a huge dose of racism, thankfully most people are probably not using the same definition that you do.
Confused says
I’m a minority so try again.
Confused says
I think you’re racist for saying things about me calling me racist. Basically you attack Hispanic people.
Tim Scott says
Feel free to point out where you think I “attack Hispanic people”…and if you think being a minority makes you immune to racism you should take a look around.
Confused says
Great. One of those people that calls minorities racist. So sick of hearing that minorities are really the racist ones.
Tim Scott says
“Really the racist ones”?
Again, feel free to point out where I said that.
Did I say that minorities are not immune to racism? Absolutely. If you think being black automatically makes people base all decisions without any considerations of race I would love to know where you hang out. Same thing for Hispanic, or Asian, or anything else.
Meanwhile, if you want to argue, make sense. If you want to discuss the systemic racism that makes the US far from the land of equality it claims to be, and what can be done about it, I’m all ears. If you want to jump into vaguely connected comments and get huffy without genuine cause, I certainly can’t stop you but I can mock you for it…and will.
Confused says
A minority is a victim of racism but people love to day that the minorities are really the racist people in our society. If you enjoy mocking others then I guess that’s on you. Sounds like you look for people you think are ignorant and uneducated and then make fun of them.
Tim Scott says
No, I make fun of people who take stupid positions and then can’t defend them. Positions like “I am a minority so I am a victim of racism and can’t be racist myself.” For example, here I am making fun of your position, and the fact that I am has absolutely nothing to do with your race.
I know plenty of people, of all races, who take stupid positions they can’t defend, and they get the exact same result no matter who they are.
Now, back at your false claims that I “attack Hispanics” or that I use the canard of reverse racism to try to deflect from the real problems that institutional racism cause for you and tens of millions of other people…point at where, retract your claim, or disappear…frankly I don’t care which.
