DUI checkpoint in Lancaster this Friday

by The AV Times Staff • June 17, 2015

DUI CheckpointLANCASTER – The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location in Lancaster this Friday, June 19, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and drug impairment. They also will check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely, according to sheriff’s officials.

DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for officers and the public.

Driving under the influence/ driver’s license (DUI/CDL) checkpoints are conducted by deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis.

Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Never see any cops in DUI class even though you see them off-duty sitting in the bar tossing back to drinks day after day. Hmmmm, peculiar isn’t it? I wonder if a quick call to CHP with their license plate #’s would help even out those odds?

THIS CITY IS HUNGRY FOR MONEY BY ANY MEANS. WEEK AFTER WEEK SAME THING I WORK SO HARD AND I’M STARTING TO THINK IT’S TIME TO SELL AND LEAVE THIS PLACE NOT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT THE CITY IS DOING AND WHAT THEY LET THE COPS GET AWAY WITH. I’VE BEEN GIVEN B.S TICKETS WHEN PULLED OVER SPEEDING WHEN I’M NOT OR CALIFORNIA STOP WHEN I DIDN’T AND WHEN I FIGHT IT I LOOSE. IT’S SAD THAT I TEACH MY KIDS TO BE HONEST AND OBEY THE LAWS THEN THEY SEE POLICE OFFICERS LIE ABOUT WHAT THEIR DAD DIDN’T DO OR DID. NOT A PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY ANYMORE WHEN YOU GOT TO WATCH OUT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD PROTECT YOU. ALWAYS ON THE EAST SIDE I NEED TO SELL AND MOVE FURTHER WEST PAY A LITTLE MORE BUT AT LEAST I WON’T GET PULLED OVER BECAUSE I’M DRIVING ON THE EAST SIDE.

The real purpose to “DUI” checkpoints is clearly revealed by the fact that the DUI checkpoint closes at the same time the bars do. Wouldn’t want those drunks on their way home interfering with the fund raiser.

I wonder if that is to free up units to do a moving patrol of the bars and their patrons driving off.

Six PM to two AM is an eight hour shift. When they break down the checkpoint the involved units go home. They just make a lot more money saying “show me your papers” by starting at six than they could make stopping drunks on their way home if they ran it from seven to three instead.

Ah, was not aware our stations worked 8s instead of 10s or 12s.

The DUI checkpoints are run under a separate program with special funding. The cops are always quick to point out that they are not run as part of, or have any impact on, the regular routine. The usual shifts may be tens or twelves, I don’t know.

Very good point Tim. Makes sense. They would definitely have more suggest catching the real offenders.
