Man shot and killed in Lancaster, suspects in custody

LANCASTER – A 22-year-old man was shot in Lancaster Tuesday and later died from his wounds, authorities said.

Aaron Brockway was pronounced dead at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the hospital, according to coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

He was shot at a residence in the 44000 block of Canyon Way in Lancaster, sheriff’s officials said.

Lancaster Sheriff’s Station received an emergency call around 4 p.m. regarding a man screaming who appeared to be shot, according to Sgt. Steve Owen of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

“Several Lancaster units responded, we located the victim and he had been shot…” Owen said. “While deputies were attending to the shooting victim, some other deputies who were canvassing the area saw two male whites run from the area.”

This suspect was arrested after a brief foot chase, deputies said. A second suspect (not pictured) appeared to be under influence of heroin, Sgt. Owen said. (LUIS MEZA)

Both men were detained in connection with the shooting, and one of the suspects “made statements indicating that he was there,” Owen said, adding that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of heroin.

“According to statements that we have received so far, [the shooting] was gang related or a drug deal gone bad or it could be both,” Owen said. A revolver was found in the area where one of the suspects was caught, he added.

Wednesday morning, both suspects were still in custody at Lancaster Sheriff’s Station,” according to Lt. Paul Pfrehm, who said he could not release the suspects’ names.

Homicide detectives had taken over the investigation and no further information could be released by Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, Pfrehm said.

A call to the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau was not immediately returned Wednesday morning.

    Victim was released from jail servering 3 months on multiple felonys and no convection!

I don’t know about anyone else here but I have never been chased by a joint, needle, straw or anything else that is drug related. It’s sad that this young man died but excuses won’t make it better. He was involved in something he should not have been and it cost him his life. Sad but true, people choose drugs and people choose the life they want to live.

The suspect should never have shot the victim if in fact that’s what happened. A good beating or calling the cops maybe.         Trump has exposed the ugly underbelly of the GOP for all to see. They’ve put him on top of the pile in the polls. Any guy sittin’ on a bar stool in the middle of the day could say the same stuff as Trump and he’d be ahead in the polls over the other clowns.

        First the GOP embraced the tea partiers that primaried any reasonable, moderate republicans in office and then Trump.

        It’s like the Frankenstein movies where the GOP has created these monsters that turned on their creators. If Trump doesn’t get the nod, he might run as a 3rd party candidate and Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the next president.

        If he is the nominee, same result. It’s lose/lose for the GOP.

  18. It’s plain and simple, this crime/murder was due to drugs. Yes, heroin, and it’s hit the AV big.
    Denying that a person may be an addict because they have a job, family, etc. is wrong. My sis got strung out on heroin, and died due to the way the drug destroyed health. She was 8 years younger than I, and looked a whole a lot older than me. I’d take her to meetings in L.A., and there are people of all careers strung out on heroin.
    So parents open up your eyes and check out what your children are really in to as it’s easy to be deceived. R.I.P. Aaron.

  20. I personally know the suspect myself, he has always been an amazing father and such a nice man. I’m deeply saddened what happened to Aaron, no one deserves to die..Im In shock that the suspect would even do such a thing.. I couldn’t even imagine him shooting anyone. Prayers for Aaron’s family. Prayers for everyone!! Prayers for suspects mother, that’s her baby boy, the suspect is an amazing father and loves his family! I’m so saddened by this. I don’t even know how to feel. I hope the right steps were taken and may it be a hard lesson for others to learn from, no one’s perfect. But there are good people out there that have substance abuse problems.     • Where do you suggest living instead?

      Crime rate in the AV is about average for a community this size.

      Drug use is very hard to measure, but since the crime rate is about average there’s no reason to think drug use rates are very far off.

      The only thing unique about the AV in regards to crime and law enforcement is that we contract with the LASD where almost all cities the size of Lancaster or Palmdale have long since organized their own police departments. I wish this was because the LASD is such a top notch law enforcement service, but since they are among the worst in the nation I really can’t offer any explanation.

      At any rate, the whole “oh, teh crime is o awful” handwringing is just nonsense. A young man is dead, and that is a very sad thing, but it doesn’t mean the town is unfit for habitation.

To be addicted to a contraband commodity is a health crisis that is considered a crime. I think being insensitive is turning a blind eye to the drug use and the consequences that goes along with it. Our valley has become a cesspool, it’s a sad truth, not racists or insensitive, just facts.             But pointing out that this was most likely a drug or gang related crime is constructive. This valley has a serious problem with blowing up every event into evidence of a clear and present danger to every citizen that then justifies letting the police run amok.

            It needs to be pointed out more often that no number of shootings over drug deals makes it more necessary to allow the police to kick in doors at will and at random…because the risks to people not involved in drug deals are not changing and this is not making the valley a “dangerous place to live.”
