LONG BEACH – A 29-year-old Palmdale man is one of four people charged in connection with a suspected gang-related killing that occurred in a Long Beach alley last month, authorities announced.

Derrick Kujuan Murphy is charged with murder, gang allegations, and personal use of a firearm in connection with the death of 47-year-old Lawrence Lee Casados of Los Alamitos, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department.

Casados, a father of three, was found dead from a gunshot wound just before 11 p.m. April 4 in the 2700 block of East South Street in Long Beach. According to a fundraising website established by his family to cover funeral costs, Casados was “enjoying a night out with friends and family”’ but he “found himself a victim of wrong timing and place and ultimately, brutally murdered.”

Detectives arrested Murphy April 23 in Palmdale. He remains jailed with bail set at $2 million and is scheduled to appear in Long Beach Superior Court on May 11.

Long Beach police announced the arrest of three others in connection with the death of Casados. According to police:

  • Murray Terry McCrea, 26, of Victorville, was arrested April 28 and charged with murder, along with gang allegations.
  • Donte Dumont Lee, 28, of Apple Valley, was also arrested April 28 and charged with being an accessory after the fact.
  • Dominic Jermaine Dixon, 28, of Downey, was arrested April 30 in Compton and later charged with murder, along with gang and gun-use allegations.

Lee is being held on $500,000 bail and McCrea and Dixon are being held on $2 million bail each.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Michael Hubbard, Scott Lasch, and Teryl Hubert at 562-570-7244. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

I new Larry since he was 5 years old. One of the most kind hearted people you will ever know. You don’t think someone like him could ever have his life extinguished in such a way. They did not know who they murdered, I tell myself. They did not know who they took from us. They did not know of his life. His wife, his beautiful children. How could they? Blowing out the candle of such a gentle soul, so recklessly.
