LANCASTER – Approximately 358 local high school seniors graduating with a cumulative 4.0 or higher grade-point average will be recognized for their academic achievements at the 14th annual 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner on April 23.

“Maintaining a 4.0 (and higher) GPA throughout high school is impressive. It meant long nights spent studying, and many of these students were also involved in extracurricular activities, adding even more pressure to achieve their goals,” stated Aubray McPherson, president of the 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner Committee. “The 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner commends them for their hard work [and] reminds them to never give up and to always keep striving for excellence.”

This year’s event takes place at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 23, inside the H.W. Hunter Pavilion at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 West Avenue H in Lancaster.

The event will honor top academic achievers from 12 local schools – Antelope Valley Christian, Desert Christian, SOAR, Antelope Valley, Littlerock, Pete Knight, Eastside, Lancaster, Paraclete, Palmdale, Highland and Quartz Hill High School.

Representatives from each high school and local elected officials will be awarding certificates to each honor student. The ceremony will also include an invocation by Bishop Henry Hearns, the National Anthem performed by trumpet player Gerald E. Lockwood, MSGT, and a keynote speech by John Vento, honors coordinator and professor of International Relations, Comparative Government and American Government at Antelope Valley College. The Master of Ceremonies will be Cecil Swetland, Ed.D, Chief Executive Officer for Desert Christian Schools.

Sponsorships still available

The annual 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner is financed through donations, and sponsorship tables are still available for purchase at the Gold ($600) and Silver ($400) levels. Each table of eight seats two sponsors and six students. Individual dinner tickets are $40.

Local businesses, organizations and community leaders are encouraged to support these young men and women for their commitment to excellence as they pursue their post high school education. Click here for more information on how to help sponsor this year’s event.

A website has been established for patrons interested in becoming year-round sponsors of the program or to make individual contributions. Visit www.avstudentsuccess.com to set up an account and make a donation using PayPal. All proceeds will benefit the annual 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner. A commemorative 4.0 Student Recognition pin will distributed to each contributor of the program.

The annual 4.0 Student Recognition Dinner is presented by Friends of the Antelope Valley Fair, Inc. and the Antelope Valley Fair Association. For more information on the 4.0 Student Recognition Program, visit www.avstudentrecognition.com.

Congratulations to the 4.0 (and higher) students!

I would like to congratulate all of you from the class of 2015 that have earned this honor! My daughter Ashley Dunn is among the 80 from Quartz Hill High School in a graduating class of more than 720. I know first hand the amount of effort it has taken her and all of you to achieve this.

Ashley – Please know that words cannot express how proud your mother and I are of everything you have accomplished in your life to this point. Your achievements academically and in sport are beyond anything we could have ever hoped for you, but it is the character of the fine young lady you are becoming that is most important and what we are most proud of. #BeYou #AlwaysBelieve

Hopefully these young men and women will not stay in the Antelope Valley. Hopefully they will realize their dreams in a more conducive place to live and achieve their goals.

That’s a crappy thing to say, “Bob”! Our community needs kids like these more than ever! Some may leave and go other places, I’m sure, but many will stay and be productive members of the community and give back to it. Others will leave for school and then return to make the community their home again, as so many have done before them. It has very little to do with the place you’re in and more to do with the company you keep and the kind of person you are to begin with!

Not true my niece is graduating from Mojave and she is having an event for recognition aswell. I’m sure other schools from the Kern county area will be present.

Vasquez HS is not part of the Antelope Valley. All other schools mentioned by LLC are part of Kern County. They have their own ceremony event, they still get included in AV’s larger events. Trust me, I know this info. directly and not as hearsay.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL AWARDS RECIPIENTS- GOOD JOB

Vasquez is in Acton and politically IT IS considered part of the A.V., even if it’s in the hills above the valley.

    It’s a shame that the following high school students are not included in this event. When these schools in those communities are recognized and participate in the annual fair;
    1. Desert High School
    2. Boron High School
    3. Rosamond High School
    4. Mojave High School
    5. California City High School

Those schools are in Kern County. I’m sure they will do their own recognition.
