PALMDALE – Plans are underway for the second annual Miss Latina AV pageant, to be held Sunday, June 7.

Contestants are being sought to compete in the pageant, themed “Premios Senorita Latina.”

“Some may ask, ‘Why have a pageant that highlights Latina culture?’ It’s all part of being proud and sharing the rich culture of our ancestries and community within the Antelope Valley,” stated Pageant Coordinator Waunette Cullors. “[The] pageant experience is unlike any other local community queen’s experience. The ladies focus on culture, history, education and community during the pageant experience and during their reign.”

The second annual Miss Latina AV pageant is open to young ladies, between the ages of 4 and 18, who reside within the Antelope Valley and have a willingness to promote Latina culture and mentor youth, according to Cullors.

“The contestants will be given etiquette lessons, speech coaching, participate in a Cinco de Mayo Parade, a Sweet Frog fundraiser and receive a trophy, sash and gain a memorable experience,” stated Cullors.

The fee is $30 and contestant applications must be received by Tuesday, April 21, 2015.

I am Hispanic and against these types of events that are not inclusive to all races.
I have to agree that is in itself racism by only singling out 1 race and promotes hatred. It should be a community event that is open to all races, religions and orientations.
Since AV Times is promoting this, you lost a viewer. Plus it may even be a scam charging $30 to enter, when it should be free.

I have 1st hand knowledge of this pageant & their little participation they do to bring awareness of the LATIN culture here in the AV….what little is done in the LATINA aspect is done in cities elsewhere. The director DOES frown & speak ill of all community pageants not only in this article but with her girls. Manipulation seems to be her way & that is to groom girls do think like her & pass on her corrupted beliefs she wants robots…..stay away!!!!

Something positive and simple, that can be turned into a convoluted, chaotic, hateful mess by commenters is a real shame.

Yet, if there were a little miss Caucasian pagent all hell would break lose in regards to racism. There should just be a pageant for all little girls, not singling them out on Race! What are we teaching our children? Segregation?

Check out the comments on this link, and you will know why Latinos feel the need to have their own beauty pageant:

Our local pageants promote the same things. As a Miss Palmdale, Quartz Hill, Lancaster, etc, women are encouraged to participate in every cultural event that takes place in their community, regardless of their ethnicity. Contestants are judged on their knowledge of their community (including history), educational accomplishments, etiquette, and public speaking ability. I have no doubt that Miss Latina focuses on the things above, however I don’t think it’s fair to say that other community pageants don’t.

Christine we did not state you don’t. Our focus how ever is Heritage, Culture of Latino’s. I’m sure you do not attend Latin American Museums, Cultural Festivals of El Salvador, Mexico, Brazil.

Take cultural cooking classes to learn recipes from our ancestors and prepare those same recipes to feed the homeless on a regular basic.

Have history lesson from professor of Chicano studies and art lesson from Latin artist to be aware and knowledgeable about our culture and learn the spanish language.

We are about Empowering, Building young ladies to be PROUD latina.

@AV Pageants – I would like you to share how and where your title holders feed the homeless on a REGULAR basis. I have never seen your queens at any volunteer or fundraising events over the past years (I mean fundraising other than for themselves). The other AV community pageant queens do volunteer all year round, it’s a year of community service, that’s what they do. One of the main purposes and why the chambers support these community pageants is to get these girls involved with their communities and understanding that they can make an impact starting at a young age. I agree with Christine, it’s not right in the article to say your title holders “focus on culture, history, education and community” unlike any other community pageant. Just because they may or may not focus on Latina history? And you did say it, read the article, they quoted you…”unlike any other local community queen’s experience. The ladies focus on culture, history, education and community during the pageant experience and during their reign.” Just what do you think “unlike any other…community queen” means???!!! I wish you luck with your pageant. Please don’t bad mouth the 15-20 communities with hard-working young ladies that represent us in the AV just to promote your own pageant. Thank you.

Why is it all about homeless work Maria? Just because your church does this and works closely with Grace Resource? There are other things to support, not everything revolves around you and your beliefs!! Take a good look at the way you really are before throwing the first stone, you are too funny!!!

@maria said what? – At what point did Maria say anything about personally being a member of any church involved with Grace Resources? She was simply addressing the comment that “AV Pageants” made about preparing “recipes from [their] ancestors…to feed the homeless on a regular basic [sic].” She also blatantly points out that community pageants support the empowerment of young women, so I’m confused as to why you felt the need to say that “there are other things to support.” It’s ironic that you’re so quick to hone in on any supposed holes in an argument with which you disagree, then tell someone to “take a good look at the way you really are before throwing the first stone.” It seems to me that you ought to be following your own advice.

Maria we don’t have to prove anything to you. We are living examples, if you visited our page you would see how they volunteer all year round.

No one has bad mouth any pageant.

You do you and we do us.

We choose to serve our community how we see fit.

How is this not extremely racist?

    • SMHX2000 says

      April 15, 2015 at 8:25 am

@Chris: Because of people like John or Bob or Lady Liberty that write filthy comments about people in this same platform, just because people have a Latino last name or look Hispanic. OMG, they run and call them “illegals”!! Yep, even if these Latinos have been living here longer than any of their own Caucasian relatives. That is why there is a Latina beauty pageant, because they love their children and they want to shelter them from scumbags like them. By the way, Latinos are 70% White, but don’t tell John, Bob or Lady Liberty. (-:

Thanks for clearing up that only Latinos love their children. You’re a real benefit to have around.
You sound pretty racist yourself, by the way.
Any event designed for a single race, is racist. That’s how racism works.
