PALMDALE – Antelope Valley’s only all-women’s flat-track roller derby league is gearing up for its first home game since 2012.

The Wasteland Derby Dames will take on the San Gabriel Valley Roller Derby Saturday, March 14, in what is being promoted as the “Dry Town Beat Down!”

The event will take place at the Hammack Center Rinks, located at 815 East Avenue Q6 in Palmdale. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the first whistle blows at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7 and will be sold at the door only. The event will also feature food vendors and roller derby merchandise booths.

The event is a chance to expose local residents to women’s roller derby, a fast-paced, full contact sport for females of all ages, shapes and sizes, according to Mario Miranda, public relations representative for Wasteland Derby Dames.

“Many people have no idea the Antelope Valley has a local roller derby team,” Miranda stated. “As soon as we inform people in our community they become highly interested, wanting to support the Wasteland skaters or even join as a female skater or male referee.”

Miranda said local support is essential to the team’s continued success.

“As a team, we believe it is important to have our locals support, whether they have an interest in joining or simply want to root for their favorite skater,” Miranda stated. “We love all the positive attention we can drain out of the Antelope Valley.”

I used to go see the Los Angeles Thunderbirds at the Olympic Auditorium in 1965. So much fun!

I haven’t been to Roller Derby since 1949/53. They held the games on Sat nite at the Los Angeles Armory. T-Birds and the Bombers, Oh Ya!. Also saw Wrestling there as well. My German Grandma would take my brother and me. She’d smoke a cigar and get drunk on beer. Great fun.

bikerbob—Wasn’t that fun! Fond memories of watching the T-Birds and Bombers. Also went to boxing matches, and saw Indian Red Lopez and the Quarry Brothers.
