Reminder: “Season of Service” project this Saturday in Palmdale

PALMDALE – The city of Palmdale’s 2015 Season of Service program will host a community service workday this Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon at 1020 East Ave. Q-5, between 10th St. East and 10th Place East, near the city’s newest Neighborhood House #5 and Community Garden.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Service activities start at 9 a.m. and will include working on the community garden in preparation for spring planting, graffiti removal, debris clean up, door-to-door outreach regarding the future mission and activities planned for the soon-to-be completed Neighborhood House, and recruitment for potential candidates for the construction training program, which will soon begin in the city’s third and fourth Focus Neighborhoods.

Live music and special activities for children will also be a part of the event. A free BBQ lunch will be provided to all participants at noon.

Funding for the event has been provided through a $5,000 grant from Southern California Edison. Some of the community partners who are collaborating with the project include Antelope Valley Youth Build, Advancing Communities Together, Word of Life Outreach Ministries, Victory Outreach and Green Thumb Nursery.

“Please mark your calendars for Saturday, Feb. 21, and come out and enjoy a great time with all of our community partners in remembrance of the spirit of Dr. King,” stated Palmdale’s Director of Neighborhood Services Mike Miller. “Let’s make a difference in our community and invite others to do the same.”

Other projects in the 2015 “Season of Service” will include:

  • Manzanita Magic – Saturday, Feb. 28 –– Park cleanup and rehabilitation of Manzanita Heights Park – 5th St. West and Mesa Verde St. Time: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Courson – Clean & Green – Saturday, March 28 – Courson Park/SAVES/Recreation & Culture cleanup and rehabilitation. Time: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Global Youth Service Day – Saturday, April 25 – Youth, families and the young at heart are invited to participate in a park beautification at Marie Kerr Park, 2723 Rancho Vista Blvd. Time: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
