NEWHALL – A 25-year-old Lancaster woman was killed Monday night in a single-vehicle crash on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, authorities said.
Shanita Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which occurred around 9:31 p.m. Dec. 29 on southbound SR-14, north of Newhall Avenue, authorities said.
Kelly was driving a 2003 Chevrolet sedan when she made “an unsafe turning movement to the right” causing her to lose control of the vehicle, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
“The vehicle veered off the roadway to the west where it collided with a guardrail,” the CHP report states. “After colliding with the guardrail, the vehicle continued in a southerly direction where it went airborne and landed in the center of Newhall Avenue.”
“After landing and impacting in the center of Newhall Avenue, the vehicle continued in a southerly direction where it rolled up the dirt embankment … and came to rest on its roof,” the CHP report states.
The collision is still under investigation, and neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash.
Kelly was a loving mother of two young boys and she worked at Walmart, a friend told The AV Times Tuesday.
