SACRAMENTO – Assembly member Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale, has been appointed to the State Assembly Public Safety Committee, which shapes California’s criminal justice laws and policies. Lackey also will serve on Assembly Budget Subcommittee #5, which handles all appropriations for public safety programs. Drawing from 28 years as a California Highway Patrol officer, Lackey’s expertise will be vital, as he is the only member of either committee to have served in law enforcement.
“There is no issue more important to a community than its safety. Without effective law enforcement to uphold our laws, we cannot have a flourishing economy or quality education system,” Lackey stated. “I am looking forward to using my experience as a CHP officer on the Public Safety Committee to help shape California’s policies, so we ensure our communities are kept safe and that criminals are fairly punished for their actions.”
“Having served at the ground-level, I hope my insight will help my colleagues understand how their decisions affect our officers serving on the frontlines,” Lackey stated.
Lackey has also been appointed to serve as vice-chair of the Assembly Accountability and Administrative Review Committee, which oversees the operations of state programs and agencies. As a Palmdale councilmember, he helped oversee the streamlining of the city’s operations in order to close its budget deficit—something he now hopes to emulate at the state-level.
“Serving in this role will allow Tom to be a watchdog for the waste, fraud and abuse that has plagued many of California’s state agencies,” said Assembly Minority Leader Kristin Olsen of Lackey’s appointment as vice-chair.
Lackey also will serve on the Assembly Health Committee and the Joint Emergency Management Committee.
Assemblyman Lackey represents the 36th Assembly District, which contains portions of Kern, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, including the communities of Lancaster, Palmdale, Quartz Hill, Acton, Littlerock, Pearblossom, Mojave, Rosamond, California City, Phelan and Piñon Hills.

it’s about time to have folks in sacramento with real-life practical experience, instead of the continuous stream of ‘career politicians’ who know nothing, and turn out to be self-serving ‘career criminals’ instead. go tom!
