Senior Expo 2014 set for Oct. 16

LANCASTER –Evoking flying carpets, genies and magical lamps, the theme for this year’s Senior Expo is “Dreams are the Key to Life.”  And the genie making a special celebrity guest appearance is television’s “I Dream of Jeannie” actress, Barbara Eden.

The always anticipated Senior Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, located at located at 2551 West Avenue H in Lancaster.  Parking and admission are free for this event, which is presented by High Desert Medical Group and Heritage Health Care.

Senior Expo offers a full day of local entertainment, giveaways, free bingo, free health screenings and seasonal flu shots for seniors 62 and over.  Health screenings will include bone density, cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and more.  Over 100 vendor booths will be present, offering attendees information and healthy resources to lead an energetic and productive senior lifestyle.

This year, seniors, 60 years or older, will receive a free lunch, served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Also, free shuttle services will be provided between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. between the city bus stop at Avenue H and the fairgrounds.

Those who bring a canned food item to donate to Grace Resource Center, a local food bank and community shelter, will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 Gift Card donated by Antelope Valley Mall. Two $250.00 Visa Gift cards will be raffled as grand prizes.

Health plan sales representatives will be available in the H.W. Hunter Pavilion with 2015 benefit options and enrollment information.

An event highlight is always the naming of the new “Senior of the Year.”  Also, in partnership with the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, the second “Veteran’s Community Service Award” will be announced.  The VCSA Award recognizes an individual or organization that provides support and makes a difference in the lives of those who have served our country.  An Awards Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., where winners and nominees will be recognized.

As a movie star, Barbara Eden appeared in more than 20 feature films, generally fantasies or fiction.  Her films included “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm”, “The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao”, and “Flaming Star”….Elvis Presley’s leading lady.  She also starred in more than 50 variety television shows, including 21 Bob Hope Specials.  But her iconic role as Jeannie, in the television series, “I Dream of Jeannie” established her as the definitive wish grantor.  More recently, Eden’s memoir, JEANNIE OUT OF THE BOTTLE, was published by Crown Archetype, a division of Random House.  The autobiography chronicles the colorful and remarkable life of Eden’s 50 year Hollywood career.

    I am 57 years old will I be able to attend this event?

      Yes you can, but I don’t think you can receive any of the free stuff…lunch, flu-shot, etc. I hope you go, I think you will enjoy yourself…lots of other stuff to do and see.
