PALMDALE – A 20-year-old Lancaster woman was killed and a 21-year-old Palmdale man suffered major injuries Thursday evening, when the vehicle they were riding in veered off a Palmdale roadway and flipped multiple times, authorities said.

Summer Leah Scott (passenger) died and Joshua Hernandez (driver) was injured in a single-car crash that occurred around 5:30 p.m., Thursday, August 7, on 40th Street East just south of Avenue P, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Anytime a car just veers off the road it should be THOROUGHLY investigated. This happened to me and my daughter about 15 years ago on 165 St. I had slowed down to about 30 mph to adjust the visor for my daughter in the passenger seat when I HEARD my cars accelerator kick in ( my car took off ) and I had no control over steering. By the time we hit the embankment we were going fairly fast and I knew we were in trouble. We rolled about five times, then landed gently upright. When I looked over my daughter was gone and the horror of imagining how I might find her was horrifying and would wake me up in a shock type hysteria at night for many months. Thankfully when I crawled out of the car I found her sitting upright right outside of the passenger door and the cell phone the somehow fell in my lap. Every window in the car was broken out and all our luggage thrown out and even a few pieces hanging from tree limbs. Our car had been worked on earlier in the day ( a tire patched and power steering work ) I tried to explain to everyone about the sound and jolt of acceleration but no one really believed me or would help to have vehicle checked out. I truly believe that many accidents ( sure has been an “accelerated ” amount lately veering off road, hitting poles, getting rear ended, catching on fire etc ) are not ” accidents ” at all. PLEASE have the vehicle looked over …….there is big money / benefits associated with electrical, car parts, specific targeting , insurance , technology , and ENTERTAINMENT. Thank God we were protected in the hand of angels that day

I really hate these roads out here in the A.V. Everything is a straight away and a one car lane, with the sides having a 2 inch drop off then all dirt.

Summer, you were like a daughter to me.It was just a week ago Thursday you, Josh and I swam together in Patty’s pool. All you did the entire time was giggle like a little girl. I will forever treasure that day.I am just sick and devastated with grief. I cannot comprehend that you are gone. you will forever be in my heart. Josh may God be with you and get well soon. I cannot believe one of the crosses on the side of the road in the AV will now represent you. God please help us get through this terrible tragedy.

I wonder if this was one of those rare instances that not having a seatbelt on saved him, in a small convertible in a rollover accident. He was ejected and it does not say she was, so sad that things change in a blink of an eye…. Condolences to all involved….

I wondered about the seatbelt too. I was a passenger in a vehicle that rolled multiple times and none of us were wearing seatbelts and all 5 survived. We were told the only reason we survived was because we were NOT WEARING seatbelts. Statistically your seatbelt will save you, but there are some rare occasions that you are better off without it.
