PALMDALE – Waste Management of the Antelope Valley and Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District (AVAQMD) have teamed up to make it easier for residents to trade in their gas-powered lawn mowers to qualify for huge discounts on environmentally friendly electric mowers.
The event will be hosted by Waste Management at its Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center (AVECC) on Saturday, May 17, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The facility is located at 1200 West City Ranch Road in Palmdale.
The AVAQMD’s Lawn Mower Exchange Program offers residents the opportunity to recycle an operating gas-powered lawn mower and receive a $165 incentive toward the purchase of a new cordless, rechargeable, zero-emission electric lawn mower.
In addition, lawn mower manufacturer The Greenstation is offering an additional savings of up to $169, depending on the choice between two lawn mower models. Based on the selected model, a single participant’s out-of-pocket expenses may range from $118 to $211 (tax included).
According to AVAQMD Board Chairman Marvin Crist, “Lawn mowers and other gasoline-powered lawn-care equipment are the nation’s leading source of off-road emissions; one gas mower can pollute as much as 40 newer-model cars.”
Crist adds that although gas-powered mowers being sold today are 90 percent cleaner than those sold 10 years ago, “only electric mowers produce zero-emissions.”
“This is a great opportunity for Antelope Valley residents to make a green difference in their community,” said Lisa Hemenway, community relations representative for Waste Management. “Trading in your gas-powered lawn mowers can dramatically help to reduce carbon emissions around your home and in your neighborhood.”
