AV Hospital hosting “Pints for Pies” next week

by The AV Times Staff • February 7, 2014

apple pieLANCASTER – Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and the Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH) Blood Donor Center is asking you to consider giving blood to mark this special day.

The AVH Blood Donor Center will be offering an incentive during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day:  a free cherry pie to those who donate a pint of blood on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, February 11, 12, or 13, while supplies last.

“Instead of waiting in line to purchase candy and flowers, please consider the gift of life by donating blood this year,” said AVH Blood Services Coordinator, Ellen Gaines. Because each pint of blood can be used to treat up to three people, “you can enjoy some time with your Valentine while helping others in need,” she said.

All blood types are needed, particularly O-negative. Donors receive a free cholesterol test, and all blood collected at the AVH Blood Donor Center is used for patients at AVH. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to give a pint of blood, but donors should plan to spend about an hour in order to complete the entire process.

“Operating a Level ll Trauma Center in addition to a very busy Emergency Department requires a large blood supply,” said Dennis Knox, AVH Chief Executive Officer. “Donating blood in honor of Valentine’s Day is a great gift to give.”

How to donate

The AVH Blood Donor Center is located on the hospital campus in the Antelope Valley Outpatient Imaging Center, 44105 15th Street West, Suite 305.

The hours of operation are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the first and third Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, or donors can make an appointment by calling 661-949-5622.

I like Cherry Pie, and I use to be a phlebotomist for the Army Reserve. I understand and value the necessity to have blood products which, by the way, do expire, and more is always needed. Become a regular donor. I wish you were open later. I get home from work around 6pm.

I made sure to pass this on to a friend of mine in the area. I personally wouldn’t mind receiving a cherry pie instead of chocolate this year! Good luck with the blood drive!
