LANCASTER – The Star Wars club of Piute Middle School held a successful blood drive last week that collected 76 pints of blood for the American Red Cross.

The event took place from 12 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5 in the school’s gymnasium. The tagline for the Star Wars-themed event was, “May the force guide you to donate blood!”

There were no empty tables all day, organizers said.

“About 150 kids asked their parents, their friends, their neighbors, their teachers to come in and donate blood,” said Principal Mike Davis. He said many donors answered the call to help, and there were no empty tables all day. All donors received a Cold Stone Creamery coupon and Laugh Factory tickets.

In keeping with the event’s theme, there was a cake contest where students designed Star Wars-themed cakes.  The student with the winning cake received a prize, and the cakes were served to the blood donors.

“We have a voice actor, we have an Origami author, and then we have a high school teacher who dresses up too,” Davis said.

This community blood drive is a continuation of the focus on community service that the Star Wars club has cultivated in students for the past five years.

“There always a need for blood,” Davis said. “This allows them to do something good by helping out others.”

Thank you to the Lancaster School District for their support of Blood Drives. As a wife of a cancer survivor, I witnessed my husband’s need for frequent blood transfusions. I am touched by the compassion of Mr. Davis and the Piute team for their dedication through the Star Wars Club to organize these events. Please keep up the good work and may the Force be with you all!
