Free Coffee for Vets Tuesday!

by M. Dilworth • August 12, 2013

Veteran coffeeLANCASTER – Calling all local veterans!

You are invited to “Tuesday Morning Coffee” on the house tomorrow (Aug. 13), from 7 to 9 a.m., at Crazy Otto’s Restaurant, located at 1228 West Ave I in Lancaster.

The event is presented by the Antelope Valley Veterans Community Action Coalition (AVVCAC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the status of local veterans through service, education and advocacy.

“Our Antelope Valley has a lot of veterans, but we don’t really know one another,” said AVVCAC Board Member Juan Blanco. “This coffee is for all veterans in the Antelope Valley – from World War II to Afghanistan – to come out and meet one another.”

Blanco said Crazy Otto’s has generously agreed to sponsor the free “Tuesday Morning Coffee” event every week until the end of the year.

“This is our first coffee tomorrow, so this is the kickoff,” Blanco said. “[In the future] we will be having speakers to discuss mental health, veteran’s affairs, and other topics.”

“Many vets don’t know that they can go to the VA for help, many vets don’t know that they can get mental health benefits, they don’t know that they can get Section 8,” Blanco continued. “That’s the premise, it’s to help veterans with the items they may need.  This is just the beginning of trying to help recognize people who have done their service to this nation and have gone unnoticed.

Nice of Crazy Otto’s to do this for the local Vets. Unfortunately, I’m at work during that time.

Great Idea! I am all for helping our Vets! I just wonder if the articles title could focus on the meat of the article instead of the free coffee. When I read the title, “Free Coffee for Vets Tuesday!” I had a picture in my mind of a bunch of vets lined up being handed a free cup of coffee in the park or at the shelter. I would have went with something like “Tuesdays at Crazy Otto’s: Vets Can Socialize, Get Free Coffee and Info”

But anyhow- Vets need all the help they can get – I think war can be hell, and for many vets, the hell continues when they come home, for reasons us non-vets just can’t understand.
