LANCASTER – The California Highway Patrol is still taking applicants for its local Start Smart Class, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 at the CHP Office in Lancaster, located at 2041 West Avenue I.
Parents and their new teen drivers can sign up for this “Start Smart” class by contacting the Antelope Valley Area CHP office at (661) 948-8541. Reserve your spot today, as space is limited.
Start Smart is a free, two-hour interactive driver safety education class, which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers between the ages of 15 – 19 and their parents or guardians.
During the Start Smart class, officers and speakers discuss and illustrate:
- Collision avoidance techniques;
- Collision causing elements;
- Driver/parent responsibilities; and
- Seat belt restraints.
Testimonials are also provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens, in addition to testimonials from parents whose children have died in car crashes.
The overall goal of the program is to reduce the number of people killed and injured on the state’s roadways through education.
This program is supported by a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety Administration through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. View a flyer with more information on the Start Smart Program here.

SoccerMom says
Wonderful program for all teen drivers. To bad it is not required.
My son participated 5 years ago. I am glad that this program exists because as parents we tell our teens about being a responsible driver but until they here the same thing from someone else other than a parent it tends to hit home.

This is a very good program. It makes me glad to see that at least the Highway Patrol is making a positive impact here in the AV.
