LANCASTER – Cecilia Lum was named the 2013 Life Award recipient at High Desert Medical Group’s Life Festival over the weekend.  The award is extended annually to a single citizen who demonstrates consequential merit in his/her community.

Lum, a former Athena Award nominee, has been active in her community for over 20 years and her involvement spans a wide range.

She served on the Palmdale Chamber board of directors from 1994 to 2001, earning a VP and “Rising Star” award for her accomplishments.  While on that board, she also developed the “Tee Off For Kids” golf tournament as a fundraiser for children in the community.

As a Kiwanis member since 1996, Lum held the titles of Super District. Lt. Governor, President, Vice president, and finally Secretary, a role she has held for the last 13 years.  She has also served on multiple boards, including the Boys & Girls Club (1995-1999), the American Heart Association (1996-1999), and the Palmdale Sheriff Boosters.

Lum’s community activism includes working with Highland High School students as a Key Club advisor, where she taught students fundamental tools such as how to create agendas, organize fundraisers, create resumes, and dress for success in the working world.

Additionally, she has volunteered at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center for 12 years and helped raise money for Grace Resources and The Children’s Center.
